BMW X 5/ NISSAN QASHKAI - Used BMW X5 or Nissan Qashkai? What to choose? - nicefella

Hi everyone!

I'm going to buy a new car soon, so I'd like you to share your opinion on the following matter: what is better - a 5 years old Nissan Qashkai or a 10 year old BMW X5?

I mean, what would you buy for roughly the same price? Nissan for £12500 or BMW for £10000.

I presume that parts for BMW would be more expensive. But how much more? Approximately. Give examples, if possible.

How much more expensive would be overall running cost of BMW, if it would?

Thank you in advance.

A £60k new vehicle has £60k running and repair costs right up until it gets scrapped, and if you need to use the main dealer for servicing the charges will make your teeth rattle.

A £20k car has proportional costs.

So much depends on how skilled a home mechanic you are, if you can fix most things yourself then surprisingly expensive cars can be cheaper than some think (fuel VED, tyres especially, parts generally will be more expensive) to own, but you have to buy the right car at the right price in the first place and keep it maintained like that for the rest of its life, one that's been meticulously maintained by someone with money, and it helps with these expensive German cars if you have a good make specialist indy somewhere nearby.

And this is where the BMW will most likely fall down, chances of it being a one owner low mileage serviced annually gem are remote, if it's been through several hands you can almost guarantee one or more of them won't have had the funds, or maybe even know why, cars like this need looking after properly.

Check if the BMW has ever had it's auto box oil changed, that will be a guide to whether it's been maintained sensibly, also it wants to have had at least one service (especially new engine oil) every year, check what rubber it's sitting on, good make tyres for these are expensive, if someone can't afford the tyres that will tell you all you need to know about the quality of bits and care you can't see.

I know nothing about those Nissans.

Thank you for such a detailed response! I find it very useful, and save it somewhere to be able to read again before the time of buying comes. But for now it looks like there is no point to buy bmw in my case.

I don't think I'd be going for either tbh given the budget you have mentioned.

I'm personally not a fan of the squashcow....Nissan=French.....and a 10 year old BMW X5 is a potential money pit...so I wouldn't touch that at all.

IMO there are better vehicles out there for the money....think Asian/Japanese.

I'm clueless, to me Nissan was kind of Japanese.. What vehicles would you advise for a tall man with such a budget. Qashkai looks ok for a man of 76 inches. And I like the clearance too.

I can't really give figures, but a 10 year old X5 will cost a lot more to maintain and out of these two I'd go for the Qashqai all day long. Avail yourself of the opportunity to check numerous owner reviews of each car on Youtube and even check this sites review section. You can always input the number plate (from an ebay listing) of one of these cars on Eurocar parts website and compare typical parts prices.

Neither are particularly reliable, consider that Nissan are owned by Renault and use a lot of the same mechanicals, both cars you stipulate are only worth having from new under manufacturer's warranty in my book. If it must be a SUV type car, consider a Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4. You haven't stated your preference of diesel or petrol and mileage per annum.

BMW X 5/ NISSAN QASHKAI - Used BMW X5 or Nissan Qashkai? What to choose? - nicefella

Well, it looks like I need to study the subject a bit wider than i expected. As i have no clue what's better - diesel or petrol..

What i need is just a car comfortable enough for my height and with good clearance.

Honds looks ok, but Toyota is a bit ugly to my mind.

As far as i know Nissans are made here in UK now, so that means spares are not so costly, aren't they?

If you want a SUV as such, then as said you won't go too far wrong with Japanese.

Toyota Rav4, Honda CRV, or one of the Mazda equivalents (confess i've not been into Mazdas so don't know the models) or even a Mitsubishi of the type.

Rav 4 will have the balance of its 5 year warranty (after 2009 i believe), not sure about the others.

Korean cars of the type can be good buys too, with a Kia Sportage for example so long as the mileage is well under 100k and the service history perfect (and it must be perfect) then you would still have the balance of that 7 year warranty, the Hyundai equivalent has a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty, again this warranty has to be perfect, vital in both cases it's main dealer history and you have receipts to prove, stamps in the book are not enough because there is big business in the used car market in false service histories.

Your main problem will be finding a petrol engined version, as since DPF issues have raised their ugly heads (and for goodness sake don't buy a Mazda Diesel) more and more people are turning away from Diesel and going back to petrol...Diesel can still be suitable for some people even with DPF's if their motoring comprises enough reasonable distance driving regularly enough for the DPF to clean itself, so many people don't have suitable use and get issues.

Your budget, assuming you want to spend so much puts you almost certainly into a DPF equipped Diesel, so do your research with any potential vehicle.

If you give an approximate location, and your typical use, we already know your budget, there are a couple of posters here who are jolly good at finding some good motors on the usual sales sites, and have linked them for posters in the past, they might if they have half an hour to kill put some suggestions up for you.

Be aware with all of the slightly smaller SUV's, that not all (qashquai for example could be either) models come with 4WD, if you are after AWD that is.

4WD is preferable, but not necessary.

Ria Sportage and Mazda, i'm going to look up their properties to compare size, width etc to be able to understand if they are good for me or not. But the looks is ok.

I certainly wouldn’t touch an older BMW let alone a highly complex and hugely expensive to maintain and repair X5. This would more than likely end in tears. The Nissan is basically a Renault Mégane in a different body and no more reliable than the French car. The 1.5 diesels are ok but there’s loads of cases of engine trouble with the 1.2 TCe turbocharged petrol. It’s not one I’d buy either to be honest.

What is your approximate annual mileage and will it be mostly local or will it see regular longer distance runs? Does it need to be an auto or are you happy with a manual? And what is your maximum budget and how are you financing it, savings or borrowing?

Brother had an X3, brought at 3 years old.

Nothing but trouble. New gearbox and new engine required over 3 years at his expense. It wasn't abused.

Unless you're planning to do a huge annual mileage, go for petrol rather than diesel. As suggested above, a Honda CRV or Toyota RAV-4 should suit you well: also there are various Kias and Hyundais to look at, although these tend to be commoner as diesels.

Based on son's experience with a 10 year old BMW 3 series, expect to spend a minimum £1k per year on repairs with maintenance on top.. Ayt 10 years old, a car is basically at or near the end of its life for all rubber components - which means suspension.

If you diy, it will be less.. but an X5 if a big car.

A cashcow? well it's a Renault ..

I'm assuming you were looking at the BMW because you fancied something with a bit more prestige?. If that is the case, and assuming you don't cover a lot of annual miles, i'd suggest you look at the Lexus RX. A £10-12k budget would get you into a 2009 RX400H (hybrid), they are not going to drive like an X5, but given your other choice was a Qashqai i'm guessing sporty handling is not a priority?. Despite the Lexus a complex car, they have reliablity that the German brands can only dream of. You can get a non hybrid version if you preferred, but it would be a couple of years older (also thirstier).

Good left field suggestion that BBD, though i understand they can suffer with corrosion issues if not looked after...which applies to so many cars these days where the upper panels and wheels are cleaned to the nth degree and almost no one gives the vastly more important underbody a second thought.

OK, so it’s a given that Land Rover don’t have the best reputation iro quality and reliability. Using that as a benchmark my friend and neighbour replaced his X5 with a new Disco. The Disco has proven to be a paragon compared to his X5. None of the X5 problems were cheap.

Sorry but your statement means nothing.. Was the X5 new, serviced on time or 10 years old and neglected? How long did he own it? How long has he owned the Disco?

Without that information, for all I know you could be comparing a 10 year old X5 owned for 3 years - and hence bought secondhand with a three year old Disco bought new.

Unless we know that, your information is ,alas, a meaningless comparison.

How about a petrol Suzuki SX4? That, or something similar, is a much better choice given your budget.
