Renault Scenic - SUV - barney100

Has anybody got a 2012/16 1.5 one of these or have any useful info? Seen a couple about but have never had a Renault.

A Renault Scenic is an MPV not an SUV, if you are concerned about these utterly meaningless labels(!).

I'm assuming this will be the 1.5 diesel, if so, i believe the engine is pretty good as far as modern(ish) diesels go. Unfortunately, the same can't be said of the car. Well designed as a practical family car, and very good crash protection. But lots of gadgets to go wrong along with Renault's reputation for reliablity which, while maybe not the worst, is a long way from the top of the list.

Not sure what your budget is or your requirments, but i wouldn't go for one of these. Unless you absolutely had to have diesel, i'd probably be thinking along the lines of a petrol Toyota Verso or Mazda 5.

They used to make a 4x4 version called the RX4 some years ago. To be fair that was pretty much an SUV.

Sadly the dci105 was badly under powered.

I expect you’ll find a lot of other piling in on this thread to tell you what they think, despite not having direct experience of the the car your’re asking about. We had one a while back, a 2009 1.4 tce bought used in 2010 and kept until 2014. Same shape as you’re looking at. It took the most horrendous abuse in the hands of the wife and kids in that time, but actually I think it stood up to it remarkably well. Found it to be very roomy and very practical which was our primary need at the time.

It wasn’t totally reliable: There was a problem with an airbag connector, also a small oil leak during the time we had it, but both problems were resolved by the dealer (out of warranty, paid for by Renault to my surprise). It was certainly not the horror show that others may suggest. Depreciation was pretty steep, but it was (relatively speaking) cheap to buy so I wasn’t so upset at trade-in. I’d have no problem to consider another if I needed similar wheels again

Bought and sold them so it’s fair to say I’ve plenty of direct experience. Very comfortable, highly practical and safe. Resists rust far better than most and the 1.5 dci diesel and 1.6 NA petrol are both very robust if you change the timing belt on schedule. The newer TCe petrols are proving to be troublesome from what I’m hearing so I’d avoid these. Sadly the electrics are typical French fair and utterly woeful as they get past about 5-6yrs old. I’d sooner have a Mazda 5 (petrol) or a Toyota Verso. Even a Vauxhall Zafira is a better longterm bet as long as you avoid the Fiat diesels 1.6/1.9/2.0. But the Renault can be a good family car as long as you accept that it’ll go wrong occasionally, it’ll mostly be minor irritants to be fair.

Never had much grief with these. The 2009ish model which I assume we're talking about there is generally as reliable as anything else and probably better than the German stuff.

Never found too much trouble with electrics either - much better than previous model.

Handsfree entry can play up (just don't use it) and sunroofs sometimes stick but basics seem OK. The dashboards don't reliably fail like the last model either.
