Never owned a Hiace, but they are more or less a van body on a 2wd Hilux chassis, and fitted with 2 versions of that Hilux engine in the main, 2.5 NA and later 2.5 turbo models though some JDM models can have the 3.0 litre Diesel (same engine just larger) and some have petrol lumps, all long lived engines and i would expect lots of parts are common to a Hilux or UK Hiace of the correct vintage...the Diesels have cambelts i am not sure about the petrols, the Diesel cambelt is simplicity itself, all it drives is the camshaft, DIY change in 1 hour the first time you do it.
The only issues i would expect would concern lighting and body parts, because such vehicles meant for use in Japan ( i presume an JDM vehicle is on the cards) may well have different body panels and lights, but this applies to many such vehicles.
A basically simple robust and durable vehicle, Toyota commercial/industrial vehicles are tough and old fashioned in the main, if it aint broke don't fix it long lived design, more rust resistant than other vans, though obviously you will take steps to rustproof it underneath.
