Has anyone on here actually had experience of driving a SsangYong?

The Tivoli is a seemingly good value mid-size SUV. SsangYongs aren't liked by the magazines, but this isn't surprising as they're not cars which would appeal to young men in a hurry who value B-road handling over all else. The Car Reviews on this site are very fair to it.

Utterly worthless when they are few years old,the agent nearest to me does not sell many if at all judging by the lack of them on the roads.

Awkward styling is the killer. Otherwise well made and robust but they absolutely crash in value from new and are treated like a bargain bucket budget brand by the trade. Makes them a great used buy but parts availablity will be an issue with few sold and little aftermarket supply in the UK.

But if no-one buys new ones there aren't any .... Maybe the missing ingredient is fleet buyers?

“But if no-one buys new ones there aren't any .... Maybe the missing ingredient is fleet buyers?”

Fleet buyers won’t touch them with such a high depreciation cost. The firm would have to give them away to offset this. A good approved used car from a more mainstream manufacturer makes far more sense despite that warranty.

Hyundai is still unlimited mileage - better for high mileage users.

Hyundai is still unlimited mileage - better for high mileage users.

Much depends on the servicing and parts costs to maintain those warranties, and i suspect few if any potential owners find out those costs for 5 or 7 typical years easily.

Following on from the LED threads, are led lights covered in these warranties, if not those costs alone could run into 4 figures easily, though this applies to all makes now fitting the things.

To quote SsangYong's web site

Every one of our models is covered with a 7-year warranty - with no hidden small print or nasty surprises. And you can also pass it on: reselling your SsangYong within the warranty terms and the new owner will also benefit from the remaining time or mileage.

but for the life of me I cannot find what the T & C's are, no sign of them.

You would hope it matches Kia's warranty in that everything is covered except the usual wear and tear items.

One question, does the 7 year warranty also cover paint and corrosion? The Kia warranty gives 5 years for paint and 12 years for corrosion.

In reality the extra 50,000 miles is totally irrelevant to 99% of private buyers, how may exceed 100,000 miles in 7 years. Hyundai is still a far better buy for high mileage users with the 5 year unlimited mileage warranty.

Unless of course you want a big, daft, unrefined pickup with a long warranty to do the school run in.

The Rodius in current (called the Turismo in the UK) and previous generation were available (in markets other than the UK and, i think, the European mainland) in 11 seater guise, such is the size of the beast!. I wonder if they would have sold here had they been available. This is is the current shape interior with 11 seats.

As for their looks and styling, obviously that is down to personal taste, but IMO there are some good and some bad. I like the Tivoli and the Korando, but the rest of the range are not that great to look at. The Tivoli XL looks out of proportion due to the huge extra bodywork stuck on the back (great for practicality though), the Rexton and Turismo both look as if their track is too narrow and wheels too small in relation to the body. The pickup (which they can't seem to decide what to call, currently Musso) is also an akward looking thing.

But from what i read, the main problems picked on by the motoring press are ride and handling, refinement (both mechanical and road noise etc), and interior quality. The pickup in particular, i have read that it's ride is VERY harsh (maybe a few backs of cement in the load bay would calm this down). But having said that, the Korando is the current 'caravan and motorhome club' tow car of the year. So i guess it depends where your priorities lie.

The pricing seems a bit variable too with some of them seeming good value but others such as the top spec Rexton, coming in at £38k, being rather more than what you might expect!.

I would rather dangle my chopper in front of a hungry Alligator.

A couple of years ago I was stunned to see the Musso racing at Cadwell Park. A one make series (not many other pick up manufacturers race theirs - I wonder why) but with improved suspension, chipped engines and a set of Avon semi slick tyres on huge rims they went well enough for what they were. Not much smoke, not much diesel rattle and not much tyre squeal. Seen worse on the track e.g. Ford P100 pick ups.

How much did the price fall the second that paint job was applied?!

Ye gods, i would hope that's a wrap job and can be peeled off.

Not a wrap GB, and not an aftermarket paint job, that lovely thing is the DMZ (yes, that one!) special edition. Unsurprisingly it is only going to appeal to a tiny minority, hence that example still being for sale. It says 2017, but that will just be when registered, they actually came out the year before, so it is essentially a (at least) 2 year old 'new' vehicle.

I dunno, it has a certain appeal, and i'm guessing young boys would love it, but it would have to be much, much cheaper!.

The new Musso pick up is fantastic value for money, drives fine, seems well built, plenty of kit.

It might look cheap with a long warranty but based on my experience of pick ups at work I would be buying a used Hi-Lux for similar money. They last forever and are pretty bullet proof, surely all you need from a pickup.

Only problem we had was the staff member who was running our fleet when the 2nd one was bought. They had no idea what to look for. The vehicle was fine but the original owner (a muppet) had fitted 22" Carlos Fandango wheels with rubber band road tyres. The first time a staff member went off road the pickup got firmly stuck after all 4 tyres were damaged. But the person who ordered 4 tyres simply fitted standard profile/width tyres to the 22" inch polished alloys which whilst giving loads of ground clearance raised to gearing and made it pretty undrivable on the road. Eventually a set of standard rims/tyres were sourced and all was well.

Indeed, whilst they might look expensive and on paper outgunned by the competition in HP goodies or towing weights, when it comes to maintaining its value nothing comes near the Hilux.

eg we bought one new in 2007 and sold it privately 3.5 years later losing only just over 25% of its value.

Quite why anyone fits 22" wheels to a pick up i have no idea, they look incredibly stupid as well as nulling the very reasons one would buy such a vehicle.
