I really could do with some impartial advice on the above car.

Purchased it in April 2018, the car from the start had a bit of a noise on acceleration (small noise) which I assumed to be the exhaust.

Ahead of long journey (2 months later) I took it into local garage thinking it may need a new exhaust who diagnosed that turbo needed replacing and fuel injectors faulty ??

After much back and forth between myself and trader, I took the car into a dealership for 'impartial' diagnosis.

Dealership informed me they had to try 4 different diagnostic machines and call in the master technician to finally get the machine to talk to it. The machine was saying that the EGR valve and glow plugs needed replacing.

This work was done, car good to go. Was advised that the car may smoke for a few days, but this was just all the crap getting out the car.

That evening car seemed to be running fine, next morning car started up ok no problems. Drove to local shop, 2 mins later tried to re-start car for it to be engulfed in clouds of exhaust fumes and juddering.

In between deciding next course of action, tried car again - it started up and again seemed run ok. Just put it down to 'car getting crap out of system'.

Next day did exactly same thing - drove to local shops (2 mins away) stopped car. Got out for a few mins and tried tore start car for the same thing - exhaust fumes, juddering, but this time car did not correct itself and so had to get towed to dealership.

Dealership are now telling me that the alternator needs to be replaced before they can do any further diagnostics on the vehicle.

I have been informed that this is nonsense and they can charge the battery up temporarily to diagnose, but what I want to ask is

Does this sound normal -

EGR valve, glow plugs and now alternator ?

or are they taking the proverbial.

What else could be causing the problem ?

Much thanks to anyone that has managed to read all this and takes the time to respond.

Go somewhere else. The EGR valve is only a valve, and like any other valve only opens and closes. It does not perform any other magic function. If it opens and closes and is clean and clear then there is nothing else that can be wrong with it. What can and probably is wrong is the inlet manifold is blocked with carbon deposits which is restricting the inlet air flow. This would be even more likely if this is a low mileage gently driven car. Modern diesels are not suitable for town driving. The EGR valve could be stuck open which would mean too much exhaust gas in the air intake. The engine would be choked of oxygen and the symptom would be anywhere between the engine running very poorly to not running at all.

Glow plugs are heating elements and are very easy to test. Failed glow plugs may prevent DPF regeneration (if your car has one) which could also be a cause of your problem.

The alternator is the main component in the vehicle charging system. A simple charging system test will tell if it's working or not.

Asked them would alternator cause juddering and smoking of exhaust. Garage - Yes

Wanting approx. £500 to replace, then they can see what's wrong with rest of car.

Asked would it be possible to temporarily charge battery to get diagnosis. No

I know they are lying about this which is putting doubt on everything else they have told me.

The car has a warranty and up to now they have paid for work - EGR valve and glow plugs) but don't want to give the p iss takers any more of my business now.

Especially seeing how I don't know if any more problems will be uncovered after they have replaced alternator. (If I let them do it)

How? If the alternator is not charging then the answer is no. If the casing is broken and it's hanging on its mountings then I suppose it would cause a vibration, but it would definitely not cause smoke in the exhaust. How on earth could it?

I suppose you could authorise the garage to replace the alternator on the clear understanding that if it does not solve the problem (which I suspect it won't) you will not pay for it. That may force them to look at it differently. It could also be the garage has caused a problem whilst looking at it, and are looking to you to meet the cost.

Do you think they could temporarily get the engine running to diagnose the possible problems you have mentioned, without replacing the alternator.

Its is a diesel car.

I can't see why not as long as the battery is fully charged. The ECM will need to see a minimum battery voltage, but if the engine doesn't need to be running the garage could hook up a battery charger to reach that voltage. That's pretty much standard practice anyway.

Thank you for you help. I will get back onto garage.

The way I see this.is that you have a 10 year old diesel Corsa fitted with the Fiat multijet engine. These engines are not robust and realistically probably coming to the end of its useful service life. I would be inclined to not spend any further money on this , move it on ,and get a petrol engine car next time.

I concur. These are a nightmare as they age and best avoided. Get shot of it, learn from your mistake and buy a simple petrol engined motor instead.

I agree - I ran a new one for 50,000 miles as it suited my purpose at the time.

Get rid of the thing as soon as you can.

A total nightmare of an engine, caused me endless trouble and expense - part-exed it for a Honda Civic - no further problems.

Update.

Have had alternator sorted and fuel injectors where sent off for diagnosis, they came back fine.Main dealer told me car was running fine.

Paid and picked up the car - Have had it approx. 1 hour and it has done the same thing again

Namely, it will run fine presumably from cold, but if I stop the car and start it again too soon - under 5 mins the engine starts juddering and it there is no power in it to move it forward.

Seems ok if I leave it for 10 mins plus.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this ? I am aware the car needs to go, but cant really get rid until its going.
