I need to get back to northern UK from Sicily in a couple of weeks.

There are no direct flights on the day, but there is the option of transiting via Milan Malpensa (MXP) with Ryanair, (unfortunate I know, but I need to get home).

The potential problem for me is that I will have a hold bag (I will have tools, so no option for hand baggage) and thus I will need to retrieve my bag from the carousel at MXP and then check it in again for the flight on to the UK along with myself!

I have two hours and 10 minutes from arriving to departure, but I have never used MXP previously and I'm not sure if I will have enough time, (if the baggage delivery is delayed for instance).

Can anyone who has experience of using Milan MXP please tell me if I'm mad, or is it an OK airport?

I really have looked into all the alternatives and this is by far the best option if it is workable?

If both hops are with Ryanair, can't you check the bag in through to the UK?

Edit: I see that is beyond Ryanair's capabilities.

BiG, as you note, despite both flights being with Ryanair, they do not (generally) check baggage through, what a PitA, as I 'could' be home by lunchtime.

I have found an alternative direct flight to Gatwick with Easyjet (whom I very much prefer, of the budget carriers at least), but it means getting home about 8 hours later with a two leg train journey back to Liverpool.

Upside is much less chance of my bag going astray, I get a good lie-in on Saturday morning and I don't contribute to O'Leary's pension fund.

I've made-up my mind.

Just over a couple of hours to transfer is cutting it too fine, IMHO, unless you can get one ticket from Sicily to the UK. If it's separate tickets and the first flight is delayed, you'll have no come-back.

In any case, I agree that EasyJet is a better option. I see they fly to Manchester from Sicily also, which might be an option if the dates suit.

FP, I'm travelling out from Manchester the Sunday before, but I'll be finished work on Friday afternoon/evening and don't want to hang around any longer than necessary. Unfortunately they only have flights to Manchester on Thursdays and Sundays this time of the year!

All booked-up for return to LGW on Saturday now with an advanced train ticket back 'up-north'.

Weve flown Easyjet twice out of Malpensa. Easyjet occupy all of one terminal which is modern and big enough to have good facilities without being sprawling. However once through security there are no visible airline service staff so ask any questions before you go through security.

Our flight this year was more or less on time but the first, three years ago was over six hours late. At that time the route's punctuality was one of the worst. I can't find the current stats. Hopefully they've improved as the compo must have been costing a fortune - we got the EU standard amount so effectively a free flight.

When waiting for your flight you can avoid the crowds around the main floor by taking the escalator down to the lower level where there is a lot of spare seating and good free wifi. Its charms did wear thin after six hours though!

Good luck!
