My mini cuts off while driving especially when there is lots of slow traffic, round abouts, junctions or while driving on the motor way. Anyone who can help explain this??

Petrol ,diesel , auto or manual gearbox??? Any testing carried out???

Mini Cooper 2010 Petrol convertible - same as above, engine cuts out when slowing down. This does not happen all the time which is so frustrating, the garage look at it no faults on the diagnostic. They are not sure what it is. I can drive it perfectly for 2 or 3 weeks then all of a sudden it happens. Every junction, every traffic light every roundabout, very dangerous in fact. Any ideas PB

When this intermittent fault occurs and it cuts out, is this when you come to a standstill or does it cut out when slowing down? Also does it also hesitate/shudder when driving for a few seconds and then drive normally again.

I assume it restarts first time when it has stalled.

It sounds like failure of a camshaft or crankshaft sensor..which would mean the engine stops running at once.

Intermittent failures like this tend to be very difficult to solve... usually test by replacement (one at a time).

If the engine does not stop at once but splutters on with weak power, that suggests a fuel supply issue .

Do you get an red warning light come up on the dashboard? If yes, and spluttering, then likely to be fuel pump..

No it does it as I slow down. As soon as I put foot on clutch it restarts sometimes I have to push the ignition button again. The automatic start/stop button flashes up on the dashboard in yellow. The engine does not tick over properly when this is happening. Yesterday I put my foot down on the dual carriageway by the time I got home it had cleared. Today nothing.... it also uses loads of oil. Doesn’t appear to be any leak though. I have had this car for 6 years, it has only done 41,000 miles. Problem only been for last 6 months or so. Complete mystery.

As mentioned above there are many reasons why it can cut out and the intermittent nature just adds to the difficulty in the diagnosis.

I know of 2 mini coopers which had an intermittent stalling problem and tried many things to track down the problem and the cause was the upper lambda sensor failing (pre cat). If your garage confirms this then I can let you know where I purchased the sensor (BMW quoted me about £235).

Also it's not uncommon for the high oil consumption and this probably can't do the sensor much good either.

Unfortunately the Peugeot/Mini/Bmw engine fitted to these does not have a good reliability record. Oil consumption is one of the main issues. This can be caused by a failed engine crankcase breather valve unit. It can also cause stalling and cutting out. Not a cheap job to replace.I think the part alone is around £200.

Thank you for your comments. I will certainly pass your findings on to my garage, fingers crossed.

The engine will either have an idle speed control valve or an electronic throttle body. The main issues with both is the build up of carbon deposits which affect the position of it. The ECM controls the idle speed by controlling these components which cannot be accurately controlled if they're covered in deposits. I'd suggest cleaning it and give the ECM time to learn the new basic settings. However you may need diagnostic equipment to reset the throttle body settings.
