Honda CR-V 2.2 diesel i-cdti - Throttle response - Michael Thorogood

This car has/is suffering from a unresponsive throttle fault whereby if you slow at a junction and then go to accelerate from a closed throttle position the engine does not respond. It has also started to be suffering throttle lag in that when you are cruising and then want to increase the speed you carefully press the throttle and the response is not instantaneous and the throttle moves what seems a long way before the revs rise. I have had the EGR valve and pipework off and checked. Although not too dirty on the first check on the bench with a vacuum pump the valve worked but on a retry it did not. I then took to cleaning the valve with oven cleaner and brake cleaner and it worked every time it tested then. It was refitted and all seemed well. Previously I had replaced the brake switch in case that was the fault and also fitted another pedal too. This fault comes and goes by the way. I have checked for fault codes and there are none and no fault lights when it happens. I have also had a look at live data but unfortunately at the time the engine was working as it should. Any thoughts? It is a 2008 Mk3 by the way

Well if you can scan for live data the scan the TPS in graph mode,

check for glitches in the graph.

Engine doesn't need to be running for test.

Have you tried the Honda CRV owners forums? They may be able to offer more advice.

Also try the civinfo forum. Lots of info on diesels ( its the same engine in the 8th Gen Civic)

I have checked live data and all looked OK. Yesterday my lad and I were checking the operation of the egr and the butterfly choke on what you would call the throttle pipe. Both of these are vacuum operated and both worked as would be expected through the rev range of Off, Idle, 2k, 3k and 4krpm. During one of the range checks whilst descending the range and whilst at 3Krpm and holding the defect arose whereby the revs dropped to 2200rpm whilst the throttle was held at what was the 3k mark. Subsequent throttle pedal movement to full on did not have any effect on the rpm. Upon taking the foot off the pedal the engine went to idle and upon pressing the pedal it revved as if nothing had happened. We repeated this with live data on and it showed what you would expect of the engine revs produced so the Fuel Rail Pressure dropped when the rev dropped from 3k to 2200rpm. correspondingly. During this the egr and butterfly worked in harmony too.So something appears to be throttling the engine and not allowing it to increase as if it was a safety intervention or limp mode scenario!

Does it maintain vacuum pressure at the vacuum pump and piping when this happens?

With common rail diesel engines, fuel delivery and pressure are paramount. When was the last time the fuel filter was replaced.?
