Peugeot 208 - Help needed please!! - Samantha Manning
Hi all, I’m looking for some advice please?? When my Peugeot 208 was last MOT’d we were told by the time it’s next one came it would probably fail on something to do with leaking exhaust fumes (or something like that) - the mechanic touched this cylinder shaped object on the underside of the car, which was a sort of rough material on the outside (vague, I apologise!) and demonstrated on how his hand was covered in black to prove his point. Does anyone know what this is??? The next MOT is due in January and we’re just trying to be as prepared as we can. ?? Many thanks in advance, Sam

Sounds like part of the exhaust system leaking fumes. Could be split/fractured. May be that just this section can be replaced without major expense. Possibly the front flexi pipe, something like this;www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peugeot-307-CC-2-0i-2003-2006-E...Z

Yes, simple exhaust leak.

You have plenty of time so get it looked at two or three places soon and see what they have to say, hopefully it will be a simply replaced section, you could try the usual fast fit joints but i'd be inclined to let a decent indy mechanic you know of and trust take a poke nose too.

Thank you sooo much - I’ve had a look at the link you sent (which was very kind of you to do) and the bit in question was identical to that. Thank you, you’ve really put my mind at rest. :)

Yup, minor issue. Don’t worry but go to any exhaust centre (NOT Kwick Fit!) and ask for a quote to replace the leaking section or back box.

(NOT Kwick Fit!)

Don't be so quick avoiding Kwik Fit. We had a 6 year old Golf and the day before we were due to set off on holiday the back box snapped off at the weld where the pipe enters the box. Went to our local trusted exhaust/tyre indy who took one look and said it would have to be a complete system since they could not replace the factory fit system in individual components and it would take about a week to get the bits. Thus it was decided to simply remove the back box (it was hanging there, rattling and doing nothing plus the car was not any noiser than normal - it was a diesel) and get it sorted when we were back.

On the way home drove past Kwik Fit and called in. They had the box in stock so up on the ramp and the fitter declared it could not be fitted since it was a factory system which could only be replaced as a full system and they did not have the other bits. I asked why could they not simply cut the existing system to the correct length to enable them to fit the back box. he looked confused, went and got the tube cutter and with the assistance of the 10 year old apprentice cut off about a foot of pipe, fitted box tightened clamp and all was fine. Paid about £65.

Seemed to me thay were all reading the same script but with a little coaxing they turned the page and did the job.

Similar here , when I brought mine to National tyres and Autocare
the young lad said he would weld the exhaust hole for a tenner..cash in hand
...which he did, perfectly..
I think some are keen to make a few extra bob...

also there is the diy exhaust bandage botchit route...applied just before the MOT
Cheers
Liam

All these places are only as good as their manager and how he (usually a he) trains his staff.

Some want to make money immediately and will fleece you: the better ones take the longer term view that if they do the repair you need, you may well come back next time you need new tyres or an exhaust system.
