need cheap car below 1k - A3lover

Hello everyone

After reading some posts for a while for advice on this subject I wanted to ask for some help choosing a low budget car mostly to make around 40 miles per day to get to work. Im trying the best I can but only can spend near 1000 now, so I know I dont have much choices.

Im mostly looking at private owners, 15 mile radius near Norwich, petrol engine cars.

last Mot has some issues, but could be minor things, trade seller

2

www.gumtree.com/p/toyota/toyota-corolla-1.6-petrol...1

Priced at 1100 but probably negotiable. Shows in the Mot check that It had a oil leak, not sure it could be too bad.

Mot looks solid, seems a good price. Dont know much about Mini cars maintenance costs/ problems.

Please let me know what you think, thanks for reading.

Only the second Corolla is worthy of a look here. The first one is very tatty and has a short Mot, if it didn’t need much the dealer would put it through another test. The Mini isn’t a reliable option at all, there’s loads of problems with these as they age, in fact I’m surprised it’s still going. I’ll take a wee look around when I get a chance to see if anything else is worth a look nearby.

Thanks for that.

found a civic that might worth a look too

Bit of a boy racer example that one and although they’re good cars they tend to see worn gearbox bearings as they get to that sort of mileage. Better avoiding sporty models and sticking with the sort of cars old folks like. They tend to be better looked after by more affluent owners. For example I bought a 2002 1.4 Civic 5dr with a new Mot and less than 80,000 miles for £550 over a year ago and it recently aced its way through another test.

What do you call 'old folks' and what cars do you think they choose?

I think what SLO is (correctly) implying is that the early 2000s Civic Sport 1.6 3dr was a Type R in looks without the R. Even I (not a boy racer) considered getting one but they were not cheap at about £14k+, only £2k - £3k cheaper than the awesome Type R. Still a good car and 0-60 in 9.9 sec. I think the 'old folk' would be choosing its 5dr brother, not much slower (0.2sec to 60), just a little more 'staid' in its looks compared to the 3dr.

Its hard to be certain from the photos but it looks like there may be a dog guard in the second Toyota? This may not be an issue but if a car does smell of dogs it can be hard to get it fresh again.

Oil leaks used just to be an MOT advisory but can now be a fail if they are actively dripping. i cant recall the detail but its a matter of how big a spot they leave on the floor in a given time when running. It has to be quite bad to fail. Repair can be anything from a few quid for a rocker seal to big costs if its one of the bigger seals. To be fair most cars of this age will weep oil somewhere. If you are interested in the car you need to check where its coming from in this case and decide if its an issue or not.

For a grand or less ,you can't get much better value than ford Focus 1.6 petrol Go for one of the last of the Mk 1 models up to 2005. Pretty much unbreakable. just watch for any rust in the sills (especially near the rear wheels and rear chassis suspension mount points.) .Plenty of s/hand spares if you damage it.

Now I see the difficulty. I had a look at Gumtree and Autotrader and there really is a lack of viable sub £1,500 stock in your area. Dealers have some but want strong money and private sales are mostly rough. I’d look at that second Corolla but otherwise bide your time, keep looking and be ready to jump when something decent flags up.

Again private sales are best at this money, look for cars that’ve been owned longterm and you want a good address, someone with money enough to have looked after it properly. If the house looks poor and tatty then you can expect a neglected car.

Best cars to look at in this price range include

Ford Fiesta Mk V 1.25/1.4 petrol
Ford Focus Mk I/Mk II 1.6 petrol
Honda Civic 1.4/1.6 (avoid the sporty models)
Honda Jazz (no timing belt to worry about, it’s chain driven)
Mazda 3 1.6 petrol (ditto above)
Toyota Corolla 1.4/1.6 petrol (again chain driven from 2002)
Vauxhall Astra Mk IV/V 1.4/1.6 petrol
Nissan Micra 1.2
Nissan Note 1.4/1.6
Peugeot 207 1.4 petrol (don’t touch the later VTi)

That said condition means more than anything here but the above models are all renowned for being robust, yes even the earlier TU series Peugeot 207’s.

From looking at what’s available within 30 miles of you it may be wise to search a little further away and rope a friend into chauffeuring you to see any prospective purchase. Just remember also to ask if the car is registered to them at their own address before viewing. If not then it’s 99.9% likely they’re a fly trader trying to flog some tat and want to avoid any comeback. You want a car that’s owned by the seller and has been for 2yrs preferably longer.

dont know why this focus is so cheap, from 2015 with low mileage and sailed well over last 3 mot`s

The description says, as well as a couple of dents, there is a warning light for the catalytic converter coming on. I don't know what that means, or how serious/expensive it might be to rectify, but that could certainly explain why the car is so cheap.

need cheap car below 1k - A3lover

yes I have noted that.

but if this is the same as the common orange engine light, isn`t that somewhat common on old cars to have it on ?

need cheap car below 1k - SLO76
It’s the maximum you’d get for a car with a fairly short Mot and Likely in need of at least a cat to pass the next one. May be a sensor but likely not.
need cheap car below 1k - catsdad
and engine management is now an MOT fail. It is no longer an advisory.
need cheap car below 1k - A3lover

do you mean even with the engine off ?

this light usually goes off when you turn the engine on

need cheap car below 1k - catsdad
I mean when the engine is running. I may be wrong but I think they have to light when the ignition is switched on prior to startng so that unscrupulous sellers cant just disable it.
need cheap car below 1k - Big John

That's why the Focus is cheap - yes this light should usually go off when you turn the engine on unless there is a fault as is the case here. Unless fixed it will fail its next MOT in January (rules changed May 20th 2018)

Must admit my old petrol 2001 Octavia now in my son’s ownership seems to be lasting well although it nearly fell at what at first seemed like a minor issue. It passed the MOT no probs but had a handbrake issue shortly after that was actually a rusted drum back-plate. My local independent struggled as they could only source the bare back-plate from Skoda dealer + then lots of new parts, cylinders, shoes, drums - this nearly wrote the car off - saved as I sourced new complete back-plate assemblies for 67 Euros each.

With ANY car you are looking at on a £1k budget condition is all especially re safety. Probably best to go for the more basic models to avoid future failure points (eg avoid headlight washers - which have to work for the MOT now). You may find a car that will last for years if you are really lucky and can thoroughly check any potential car - however be prepared for the fact that you may have to scrap any future purchase as many repairs required may cost more than the car is worth.

I'd steer clear of diesels (although you have mentioned you are looking for petrols) as these can have expensive problems and many are now failing MOTs on the new smoke test that now has to be passed against the original plated value!

Probably best bet is an old "non turbo" simple/basic Japanese petrol car. Still check for rust as despite popular opinion it's still a problem with some cars. As well as the Corolla the Honda Civics of that era were great cars.

Citroen C3 (petrol), generally reliable and dirt cheap because people are scared of old Citroens - yes, the Focus is a better car - but you'll get more C3 for your money.

Toyota’s are always worth a look and this was a robust and very practical model but many owners bought them and neglected them so you need to check it carefully.
need cheap car below 1k - sandy56

At this low price you will be lucky to get a car with a known service history. By all means try to find one, but probably you will have to pick the best available car on its condition and having a long MOT. But whatever you buy will be a gamble, and you wont know if you made a good decision until a few months have passed. Japanese and Korean petrol cars are probably your best bet.

need cheap car below 1k - A3lover

I know what you mean especially about the gamble side of things. Im in my late 30`s and have bought quite a few cheap cars.Thing is my time is running out because Im to start a job next week so I really need to rush which is something I hate when buying.

Been thinking about taking a shot at anything 4 wheeled with 12 months Mot near 600 and later with more income, spend at least 3k for a decent buy.

Thanks for the comments all you guys

Jazz is a great budget option. Engine is bulletproof and it’ll do 50mpg but listen for noisy thrust bearing and whining gearbox bearings. It should be very quiet running.

Good as they are it’s worthless with 170k up, really it’s £400-£500 tops. You can get a reasonable sub 100k example for £1k. That friend of a friend is doing you no favours.

today im going to have a look at the second toyota corola from 1st post, got it reduced to 1k and from what I talked with the owner seems a car that was maintained with good standards.

Im most likely buying since there`s such lack of good options around my area.

Any things you advise me to look for at this model ?

Looks a good Corolla to me, MOT history is one of the best i've ever seen.

Apart from the usual checks, note the dog guard and boot tray so it may smell a bit doggy, not the end of the world, much nicer smell and easier to clean properly than a smokers car.

Anecdotally Norwich area has always been expensive for used cars, at one time circa 30 years ago i used to go through Norwich town every day, as well as Diss, Bury St Edmunds, Thetford etc, used cars on sales picthes were significantly higher than in my Northamptonshire area.

It’s chain driven so before you go tell them you want to hear it start from cold, then when you get there you pop the bonnet and feel the top of the engine for heat. If it’s warm you know they’ve started it before you got there most likely because it has a starting issue or a noisy timing chain. It should go quiet almost instantly.

Gear synchromesh’s can become weak on these around 100,000 miles so make sure it changes cleanly without balking when warm, it may be a little sticky when cold. Look for the clutch biting point being too high and also check it’s not slipping by accelerating from low speed in a high gear. Other than that it’s all the same basics you need to look st on any car. Gearboxes and clutches are the biggest weak points on these so focus there.

Thanks for that SLO76. by too high you mean pushing the pedal all the way down or the opposite ? Is this a good or bad thing?

need cheap car below 1k - SLO76
High as in the clutch disengages at the top end of the pedal as you’re lifting your foot off.
need cheap car below 1k - A3lover

ok, and being too high is a bad point ?

Yup, though every model and every car is different. Best if you can find someone who knows what they’re doing to join you even if it means bribing them:

I know what you mean and I would never buy 3k+ car without going with someone with very good knowledge, however this is my 2nd time buying a cheap car in the Uk and lets say there`s not been enough time/opportunity for me to meet a friendly private mechanic.

From what I read on other posts and the advice you guys gave me here I assume to have picked a good example of a car (although always a gamble) and to be well prepared to go alone.

need cheap car below 1k - SLO76
Might sound great on paper and even look good in the pics but don’t get overconfident, it could be a heap. It still needs carefully looked at with wide open eyes. Just because it’s a good make doesn’t mean it’s a good example.
