Skoda Octavia Scout - is it a keeper? - Paul Robinson

The lease agreement for my 2016 Scout 184 bhp 4X4 DSG is due to end in just under 6 months. I've already extended the lease from 2 years to 3 as I've been very happy with the car. It looks like they will want about £14K if I want to buy it at the end of the contract. Heart says - it meets my needs very well, I enjoy driving it and would miss it if it goes. Head says £14k is a lot to spend on a 3 year old diesel that might start to get expensive to run before long....

If was a manual I’d say keep but the DSG box is notoriously troublesome and expensive to fix as they age, I’d get rid of it.

Wouldn't it be cheaper and less risky to lease another one?

If that's not an option, then it's worth finding out whether the DSG on your Octavia Scout is wet-clutch or dry-clutch. If the former, it has a much better chance of lasting several mmore years without trouble.

The DSG on a 2.0 diesel will be wet clutch. We had one in the office that did 150,000 miles with numerous drivers and had no issues.

The oil in these boxes needs changing at the correct intervals otherwise trouble is guaranteed. I would wager that a majority that have issues have not been maintained correctly.

Another problem is remaps. Many VAG diesels are remapped and this can put extra stress on the boxes especially in the lower gears. Not sure about VAG but some manufacturers reduce the available torque to prevent wheelspin and protect the transmission. Many remaps remove the limit feature which is why they feel faster but this will ultimately lead to premature failure.

If the OP's car has been maintained correctly and he intends to continue maintaining it correctly I see no reason why it should not continue to be reliable.

But if he returns it and busy and alternative for similar money what guarantee does he have it will be reliable, in a word NON.

Cost of a new 3 year lease is a similar amount, hence the dilemma...

It is wet clutch.

What sort of mileage do you drive? What are you looking for in a car? Do you really need a 4x4 drivetrain, diesel engine and DSG gearbox, or would a simpler petrol engine and manual gearbox be suitable?

I do about 12K pa - it's not a case of if it's a suitable car for me, the issue is taking a view on if it is reasonable to expect that it could continue to give good service for a few more years?

If it were me, the costs being similar, I'd go for leasing a new one without a doubt.

Skidpan is right that you can't guarantee that a new one will be as reliable, but there's a better chance of a new one being trouble-free, as yours has been, than a 3-year-old car. Other things can of course go wrong with a car as well as the DSG as it gets older. If anything does go wrong with a new one, it'll be covered by the warranty.

And you have the opportunity of seeing if anything else would suit you even better than the Scout: the suggestion of a petrol Karoq sounds like a good one.
