Project - a VGC Volvo funeral car. 1996, 82k miles, can probably get it for just over £1000

1. Take out middle row of seats

2. Install 2 backwards facing drop down seats behind driver so all passengers face each other (ripped out of a scrap black cab)

3. Get very jazzy seat covers & upholstery

4. Lots of tiny "stars" in the roof lining

5. New plush carpet

6. Best of all, a full car "wrap" in a stripey jazzy design of my own

Weddings only so no PH operator licence needed

Comp insurance is £575 with full disclosure of all alterations

impressive, nome sane?

all comments from the experts very gratefully received

That sounds more like a hen night hire car than a wedding car to me, but whatever floats your boat my man.

You need business insurance and public liability cover which will cost a lot more than this, a hackney taxi for example typically costs well over £2k. Plus while you don’t currently need to register with the local authority and pass a separate taxi test on top of the Mot there are plans in place to change this so I wouldn’t go ploughing anything into this idea just yet, the cheapo wedding car hire industry is about to disappear.

you're right, the market for wedding cars is shrinking at the cheaper end- I work at a lot of weddings over the year in a different field

however I have do have a motor insurance quote for wedding hire at £600. That's the legal requirement

the possible introduction of licensing is swaying me -where I live a PHO operator licence is £160 but I know that's only the start of the expenses

on the other hand I will have the funniest car in the village

Like your thinking.

Nice to see you here again Bananastand.

Maybe some alternative couples would like this sort of thing, but can't see it being a viable business because they would probably expect mates rates (and alternative lifestyle people probably have alternative friends with things like Hummers or converted coffin carriers complete with coffin who would be glad to provide transport), plus the vehicle is hardly useable as a normal vehicle in between the odd hire.

I think wedding cars have to be refined or unusual in a classic/regal or rare way, and impressive in value or bling in these days of image, ie some of us here (me) would cringe if a stretch white Hummer rolled up and turfed the bride out, but others seem to like that sort of thing.

Thanks Gordon, it's been a while

SWMBO is 100% against the idea so it might not get past stage #1, that is, going to see the car at all
