Mini one D - Broken cam shaft chain - Theresa Ryan
Hi
Can I ask about my mini that broke down and was taken to the mini garage I have used to regularly service my car. It has 120000 on the clock and is 7 years old.

The garage told me they would charge £500 to take a look at the engine and confirm the cam shaft chain is broken but found parts of it in the engine. It is likely to cost me a new engine of £6000.
They advised I didn’t bother and I am now left without a car and had to buy another one not a mini I would add.

Is it worth making a complaint as I was not told the cam shaft was wearing or had a sensor to tell me as far as I know? The car simply slowed down and stopped.

Any advice grateful.

Theresa

There is no warning or sensor that will advise that the timing chain is about to give way. Sadly, Mini engines of this era, either petrol or diesel are made of chocolate and regularly self destruct through chain failure. The garage are correct. I think it is game over for this car . Do not spend a penny more on this car. Put it on flea bay, spares or repair.

As above. There’s absolutely no comeback on a car of this age and mileage. I’m amazed it got to 120,000 miles to start with as Mini’s of this era (or any for that matter) have a poor reputation for longevity. Spend not one penny more on this.
