FIAT Panda - First Car - Fiat Panda or Nissan Pixo - Dan_O

I am looking at buying my first car and don't have much experience in cars and would really appreciate if anybody could help me, I like both the fiat panda and nissan pixo, if anybody has any experience of either of the cars i would be really thankful. I have found a 2008 fiat panda elegenza 1.2 and a nissan pixo 2010 1.0 both £2500 and have less than 35k miles. I am leaning more towards the panda as it has greater head room and feels larger inside, but the pixo has greater mpg. From what I could see online though they are also both reliable cars. Thanks in advance.

The Pixo was a re-badged Suzuki Alto, which wasn’t in the Nissan range too long because it didn’t sell at all well. So if you’re looking to have your car serviced at a franchised dealer, there’s a fair chance Nissan technicians won’t be overly familiar with the Pixo, whereas a Suzuki workshop will have seen lots of Altos.

Condition and history are more important than make or model at this age and money but in general the Japanese build the most reliable motors. Between these two and all things being equal the wee Fiat is the nicer more refined car to drive but the Nissan is likely to last longer and give less grief.

I’d expand your search a bit as a few mins spent on Autotrader looking around the area those garages are located flagged up several low mileage small Japs such as the Honda Jazz, Suzuki Swift and Toyota Yaris all of which are better cars than the two you’ve mentioned.

As much as i like the Panda, i'm not sure a 10 year old example would be the best place to put your money. You have not mentioned your age (which is fair enough), but that is going to be a factor in which cars would be best to recommend. I'm guessing given the two you have mentioned (especially the Pixo), you are not overly concerned about image or vanity!. This is a good thing, cars likely to appeal to the younger male drivers, are likely to be more expensive to insure than something like the Pixo (insurance companies will assume the car will be absolutely thrashed, all the time!). As someone else mentioned, the Pixo is just a Suzuki Alto with a different badge, so it would be sensible to include that on your list too. Very reliable, very efficient, very small and pretty basic (i.e, little to go wrong), if your journeys are going to be mainly urban, you could do a lot worse. But if your journeys are likely to include a fair bit of main roads, maybe something with a bit more sound proofing would be in order.

Panda all the way .Great to drive with very few vices. My neigbour had a Pixo and could not wait to get rid of it. Drove like an arthritic lawn mower. Complete pile of poo.Made in India,if I am correct.

Probably Maruti have a factory that makes some Suzuki models - mainly for their domestic market. A lot ot Suzukis' come from Hungary now, such as the Vitara (I own a 1.4 Turbo Vitara S) . The new Swift comes from Sagara in Japan. I've just ordered one as it happens a 1 litre turbo, to replace my wife's 17 plate Ignis.

I think it probably depends on what you want, or expect from the car. My mate's wife has an Alto, she has owned it from new (about 9 years) and loves it. Nothing has ever gone wrong with it, and it does exactly what she wants from a car.

And yes, the Pixo was built in India, in the same factory which made the Alto (and now makes the Celerio)

I have had a look online and examples of both cars can be found a good few years newer for the same money. Not sure where you are but i can see 2011 Panda's for £2500 and 2013 Alto's.

I've got a basic 09 Fiat Panda which has been a great little car. I bought it second hand at 2.5 years old on about 25000 miles and its now on 96000. Its had very little go wrong with it apart from normal wear and tear items and i've been able to fix everything myself. The only niggling problem is a water leak into the boot. If not already done an 08 will likely require some attention to suspension, timing belt and probably the exhaust. An elegenza is in a higher road tax bracket than the basic eco models so this is worth checking as you could end up paying £140pa rather than £30.

I did look at altos/pixos before buying the Panda and they are more obviously built down to a price, things like non dimming rear view mirrors would annoy me. The Panda also has a very active forum and many parts in common with the Fiat 500 and 2nd generation Ford Ka if you want to maintain it yourself.

Provided the Panda has been looked after and serviced, I wouldn't hesitate, We have a 2007 1.1 here, owned since 2009 and now on 70000 miles. The only thing that's been needed are 2 drop links, which were a simple DIY job recently. And a couple of back boxes which seem a bit vulnerable to corrosion. It is a very simple car to maintain and extremely cheap to run, it will give you 45 to 50 mpg, and more on a run. The engine goes back to the 1980s but is a sweet revving delight, the whole car has a charm which is rare in a modern car, every time I drive it I feel 30 years younger! In fact if i could only have one car going forward, I may well choose a Panda for its sheer charm. Reminds me very much of the cheekiness of the original Mini
