My Volkswagen Golf, 2003 automatic model has problems changing from 3rd to 4th gear.

For the first 5 minutes of the journey gear changing is fine,changing into 4th with no problems. But after around 5 minutes of driving the car will go from 3rd to 4th and straight back down to 3rd. It then stays in 3rd and won't go back into 4th even when going at high speeds or anything above 40. The revs are obviously very high because of this and is using alot of petrol.

The car has recently had its gearbox oil replaced but problem still the same.

Presume this is the old torque converter type box? - If I remember rightly it doesnt have a dipstick and getting the oil level correct is difficult.

Any error codes being logged?

Anything not quite right with the gearbox cooling circuits? I wonder if the oil isn't circulating to the oil cooler causing issues as it warms up.

I would also get the engine control system checked. Any fault here can affect gearbox performance.

Is this a 4 speed auto?

What engine type and size?

Are all the other gear changes happening at normal change points, as it could be stuck in kickdown mode due to a faulty accelerator switch?

Yes its a 4 speed auto, engine size 1.6 .

She can be a little slow to change into first and sometimes revs high to change into 3rd.
