Morning all, after lurking on the sidelines for years Ive finally taken the plunge and registered!

Your opinions on the following if I may, Due to pick up our new car Saturday, Moka x 1.4 t,

So Friday had a call from the salesman saying the car was ready and would we like to pick it up Tuesday as he needed the room and needed to meet his sales targets! I politely declined as the reason for picking it up on the first was to get the latest reg number.

I thought he was being rather cheeky,

A lot of dealerships don't like delivering cars on the first saturday of the new registration as lots of people want the same as you. Just Phone to say you expect a 68 plate or else...

...or a significant discount for a 17 plate perhaps delivered early? If they want to meet a sales target presumably to earn a big bonus, then surely they can reduce the price or give you some freebies (maybe even some free servicing for X years) to 'encourage you' to take possession early and thus have a 17 plate that's worth less than a 68 plate.

It would be an 18 not a 17.

Yes, the dealer will probably get extra discount if registered this month/quarter.

I bet it's already registered!

A neighbour once had a new registration delivered a few days early. IIRC it was once possible to drive them early as well?

First thing I asked, its not.

Sales staff hate putting cars out at the weekend as it is time consuming and means they lose out on at least an hours worth of weekend sales time when the garage will be at its busiest. I always tried to get customers to pick cars up through the week if at all possible but I certainly wouldn’t ask them to take a loss with an earlier registration. Double check before arriving that it’s not already been registered on an 18 instead of a 68 plate. It probably has by the sounds of it.

Sounds fishy to me too, just say other commitments mean it's the weekend.

All manufacturers I have dealt with recently run the summer 1/4 from 01 July to 31 September thus a registration on 31 August or 01 September would make no difference to bonus.

But sometimes there are special buyer incentives which operate to different dates. Our Fabia was registered 30 April even though we did not collect it until 01 May simply because the test drive bonus ended on 30 April. Nothing to do with Skodas Spring 1/4 whic runs from 01 April to 30 June. If we had insisted on a 01 May registration we would have paid £1000 more for the car. 30 April or 01 May will make no difference to the value when we sell it, 18 plate regardless.

I'm now also wondering if the new EU testing played a part - haven't a lot of makes rushed to get new cars through and registered before the change - is there some penalty they have to pay if they don't and still let them go on the road (if they can at all), or is it the date of manufacture that counts?

The issue over bonuses might make a difference as surely the 1/4s are aligned with the start of the new registration dates of 1st March and 1st Sept? Isn't that why so many dealers pre-reg cars just before that date to make the sales targets?

Just a thought.
