BMW 3 Series Compact - New Battery for Old Car? - meldrew

I have a sixteen years old BMW which is fundamentally very reliable once it gets going! The battery is a two year old Varta which is very "iffy" It charges up but does not seem to hold the charge and test show no obvious electrical leak. After a charge it dropped to 10v when (not) starting so I intend o get a new battery.

It is an 027 but still so many choices!

Any suggestions for god/bad brands and suppliers?

If it's a two year old battery isn't it still under warranty? Most batteries seem to have at least a three year warranty these days.

I changed the battery on my Mondeo a couple of years ago. Bought a Bosch S5 from Euro Car Parts. No problems, so far! Has a five year warranty as well.

The original battery had a four year warranty but expired after two. The replacement is under the original warranty and has now run out after another two even though I had been complaining for sone time!

Given that pattern, it might be worth checking your charging system. If its over or under charging that's likely to shorten battery life.

OTOH IF they are replacing them for free (?) you've got a battery for life.

Which would be nice.

Yes, I would certainly suggest getting the charging system checked.

No, he hasn't got an infinite supply of new batteries for free, I'm afraid! The OP purchased a new battery which had a four year warranty. This battery failed after two years so he was then given a new replacement battery.

However, the warranty on the replacement battery is the same warranty that the original battery had, i.e. a total of four years for the original new battery and any subsequent replacement batteries supplied in the event of failure of the originally purchased one. The replacement battery is only covered for the remaining two years of the warranty and this has now expired.

Charging is OK just been unlucky perhaps twice and an unhelpful supplier. 550 CCA is fine but it does not start the car at 9.7 volts with a recharged battery.

Was interested in any "value' brands and suppliers to last until I decide to shell out for a newer car.

have a look at the batterymegastore.co.uk from Tewksbury, order before 2pm and delivery the next day, always competative on prices & the price match against other suppliers. They promote a battery Hankook in various sizes all with a 4 year guarantee.

BMWs can be a bit fussy with batteries, i’ve seen similar issues with a 7 series of the same age. Good brand of battery installed from a reputable supplier, and within 12 month’s it needed replacing. Something to do with the onboard computer, ended up taking it to BMW and having a genuine bmw battery fitted. No problems since.

Thanks for helpful replies. MoT next week so I will get my excellent garage to check for any other problems and report back.

The previous "genuine" BMW battery lasted ten years. Makes me wonder what is differnt from other batteries apart from the price?!

Original batteries and exhausts always seem to last longer than any replacements.

For the past few years my choice of aftermarket battery has been Yuasa, their best of which carry a 5 year warranty and will usually go on for as long as any OE, but they take a bit of finding, the usual aftermarket makes we get here don't seem to last anywhere near as well as they once did.

Good OE batteries wasn't always the case, in the bad old days of 12 month warranties on new vehicles, where i worked in the 70's we ran Diesel Transits, you could almost bet the shirt off your back that at 13 months the OE batteries would peg out, i honestly believe the arrival of large numbers of Japanese cars made the other makers sit up and take notice and sort such things out, because whilst they may have been no better for rust resistance, Japanese reliability durability and electronics were streets ahead in comparison.

Is a sollar powered charger an option. Could keep battery typed up whilst not in use? With minimal effort from you

Varta batteries are good so 2 failures makes me think that your charging system is not working correctly. Does your BMW need to be coded for the new battery? If so, that may be the problem. If a battery isn't charged properly it will fail prematurely.
