Peugeot - Handbrake and handbrake light issue - focuskev
Hi.
If the handbrake light is out are the parking brakes supposed to be engaged in any way, even if the handbrake lever is not fully down?
Just that a firm I’m working for has found the pads have overheated on the rear wheel and are trying to make me pick up cost.

Pretty certain the parking brake uses a seperate drum brake on the rear wheels. If the rear pads are worn/overheated then most likely lack of maintenance.

Many garages including main dealers believe that a brake service is spraying some brake cleaner near the calipers rather than removing the road wheels, disc pads and giving the pistons and calipers a good clean and inspection.

Cheers Cris but I just wanted to know if the handbrake light is not on should there be any engagement of the rear brakes in any way.

Yes OK but if they are claiming the pads are worn and the handbrake does not use the pads then you are in the clear !

Does the handbrake light come on when handbrake applied, in many cars this light is linked to brake failure (low fluid) as well

Does the handbrake not use rear pads to hold it? They are claiming I left the handbrake 2 notches up from the floor and burnt out the pads or whatever part engages to hold the vehicle but the handbrake light was not illuminated so I had no reason to suspect handbrake engaged

If you can provide exact make and model I can pull up Peugeot technical diagrams showing the brake system, to confirm the rear pads and shoes.

This video shows rear pads and handbrake shoes on a Pug:

You can also throw back at them that if the handbrake was on, the central console information display would have shown "handbrake on", and I'm sure that this is logged in the car's BSI log along with the mileage (in KM) when it was recordeed - which can be interrogated with Peugeot Planet or Diagbox software.

Not your fault in any way!

The drums have probably never been off for servicing,

Ever!

Dust build up from the SHOES or some monkey tightening the cable adjustment are more likly causes.
