A friend recently widowed cannot find where her late husband has left the wheel nut kit.
A new set of nuts etc Is going to cost £200 + from Hyundal

All the obvious places have been checked , glove box , spare wheel well.

Can anyone suggest another hiding place ?

Ask a tyre fitting place. They must know the usual cubby holes. Also they can quote for removal. Probably a lot less than £200. When all else fails dont they sacrifice a socket to force the locking nut off?

Mine is permanently taped to the wheel brace alongside the jack - so it should be with the spare wheel. Is there a pile of spanners and sockets in the garage? But if it is the sort with a combination of 4 protruding lugs, it may have collapsed from prolonged use.

Take a digital photo high resoluton and email it to the locking wheel nut supplier, Mine (a kia) is Mcguard) original fit. a new set of locking nuts is cheap on (fl) e(a)bay..

That is if not stuck under the seats, or actually under the spare??

As is mine, most logical place to keep it. Once bought a car and the sellers couldn't find the locking wheel nut key of the (deceased) previous owner. Told them I'd knock a couple of hundred quid off my offer without it, concentrated their minds wonderfully. It turned up before I collected the car.

Don'tthey just need a new key?

That's what I was thinking. The 'key' in every car I've had with locking wheel nuts has just been a simple piece of alloy, round on the outside and (I think) a hexagonal hollow inside.

Hyundais may be different, but I'd have thought it would be a standard spare part, one for each size and type of wheel.

If the dealer is trying to charge your friend £200+ for new wheel nuts, ask them how they propose to get the old ones off, and can she have a similar key please?

There is a slight variation in the pattern just like house keys. There will be so Many dfferent patterns. When I worked in a garage a coustomer didn't have his locking wheel nut. The local Mercedes dealer came out with 50 different locking wheel nuts and tried them untill he got the right one.

Cam the Hyundai dealer nor do the same?

Our local Ford dealer holds a full set of all the locking nuts used by Ford-when you find the right one he''ll order a copy, not a full set.

Many thanks for your excellent responses.
It's certainly clarified the problem but too late I'm afraid as she has put the wheels in motion with Hyundai to sort the problem.

Locking wheel nuts are so easy to get off they are hardly worth it.

The only people they stop are the amateurs like us. If a serious thief wants them they have them off in no time.

There are several tools on eBay as I found out when our Ford key disappeared. The Ford dealer bodged them off in about 30secs.

Same for Mini. Had a damaged locking wheel nut, took to dealer, out with master set, new key ordered. Sorted. £27 or thereabouts.

Many tyre shops have those tools-just ask if they can remove the nuts!
