HJ used to have a list of cars with torque converter automatic geaboxes.

I can't find it! Anyone know where it is?

Has it been updated?

And cam chain engines, as well, while we are at it!

Torque Converter gearboxes: BMW (but some models are now DCT), Mercedes Benz (9G Tronic only) Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo, Mazda, Ford (new Fiesta and Focus) Vauxhall, Ssangyong, Citroen (excluding C1) Peugeot (excluding 108), Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10. I think all engines are chain cam now except for VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat.

aren't cvt gearboxes also torque converter?

Torque Converter Auto Gearboxes - KJP 123

aren't cvt gearboxes also torque converter?

Not same thing at all.

Torque Converter Auto Gearboxes - jc2

Some cvt do have a torque converter built in.-used to be called a fluid flywheel.

I know rhey uae belts rather than fixed gear ratios, but how do they transfer drive? Do some use dct style clutches? We have two autos, a Toyota cvt and Mercedes 7-speed and in practice they both have the same 'feeling' on the road.

Really put your foot down in both and you'll hear the difference.

Kia Sorento is chain cam and torque convertor

Kia Sorento is chain cam and torque convertor

Indeed. I forgot to mention the Kia Stinger, Hyundai Santa Fe and Suzuki cars (excluding Celero and Ignis models.)

My 2014 Honda Jzz CVT has a torque converter. Its effect is obvious when maneouvering at low speed. The much rarer Jazz hybrid uses a clutch + electric motor. No idea when the Jazz TC locks up - I imagine it's pretty much at walking pace, then the CVT does all the work

I took the question to mean torque converter + epicyclic box auto transmissions.

Anything Mercedes with the 7speed gear box (and older 5speed box) and any Mercedes 2.0/2.2L diesel engine. Also any Mercedes petrol AFAIK.

Anyone have a modern list?

Why don't you just list the cars you are interested and we will try to tell you whether or not they have T/C auto.

Not sure what size/type of car you are interested in but we have a current shape Jazz CVT which i rate very highly indeed, and the Toyota Yaris has a very similar setup. So if it is a small car you need, you should include those two on your list, at least till you'd test driven them.

Ford Fiesta or Focus, not 1.0 litre engine.

Toyota Yaris or Auris.

Mazda2 or 3.

The Fiesta 1.4/1.6 petrol uses a conventional torque converter auto but the later Powershift box is an automated manual and notorious for problems. The Focus uses the same gearbox, again avoid anything with a Powershift box this includes some Volvo’s. The Yaris and Auris use Toyota’s tried and tested CVT boxes which are pretty much bulletproof. If you are an enthusiastic driver you may find them a tad unrefined but driven normally these are great small self shifters. The Mazda 2/3 both use a lightweight torque converter set up that should prove utterly reliable. Nothing to fear here and they’re great fun to drive if not as responsive as turbocharged rivals.

I can vouch for the Mazda TC box - I've test driven it in a 3 and a CX-3 and they are lovely and smooth; just a shame the cars don't have a bit more power, as if they did, they'd be brilliant.

The weird thing about Volvos is that, at least until recently, some had TC boxes and some Powershift dual clutch units - a bit like their odd V40 petrol engine lineup, consisting of 2.0 units, all apparently turbocharged but some only 122PS (I can't believe that is though) and others 152 and 180PS. By all accounts, many main dealers and sometimes people working at Volvo UK didn't know which models had which engines and auto boxes.

The 1.5T (presumably Ford-derived) petrol engine (in low and higher powered formats) now seems to have added to the confusion. Not sure if they've completely ditched all the PShift boxes in the range yet.

Utterly confusing.

+1 for the Jazz (CVT and TC convertor- very smooth)
