Thanks. Really WHLVTP!

Surprised people don`t know about it, it`s been mentioned a lot on the internet. its more accurate on fuel consumption than the last useless method

Supposedly - be interesting to see it in action. When you go to the "Real Mpg" section on this website and see the wide range of readings, "real" is a bit meaningless:

Random example - Ford Focus (2014 on) - Real mpg 25-69 - average 45.6

A LOT depends on :

drving styles (fast/slow,sympathetic, brutal)

Terrain ( hilly, mountainous, flat)

Traffic (motorways, A roads ,town ,rural)

And owners who can't do sums, don't keep accurate records or lie...As most appear to quote displayed mpg, that is of course usually optimistic rubbish and can be ignored.

Everyone I know works from dash reading and will not believe they are wrong, question is always why put it there then!?

i ran a group of garages for 5 years in the '90's.

We often had customers complaining that their MPG did not meet the official figures on the computerised read out.....which we know is totally nonsense anyway unless backed up by Brim-to-brim checks. However, he always invited the customer to reset the on-board computer and choose a 10 mile route, drive themselves in their own style with a warmed-through engine, and time the journey. After a computer re-set, he, then, took over the driving, repeated the route in as close to the "test" time as he could and checked the computer MPG.

He, invariably, achieved over 10 more MPG than the customer by driving correctly, in the right gear and with empathy with the mechanics of the car.

It's a pity that an awful lot of motorists waste fuel by applying the brakes too readily, drive in the wrong gear and, generally, waste their money and the planets recources

Avant, I trust that I haven't offended you or the readers of this forum as you suggested I had done with my last posting. As a Yorkshireman, though half Welsh, I tend to fire from the hip!

Folk who can't drive should be told so!

WLTP - Avant

No problem - disagreement is part of the life of a forum like this, provided that we all respect each other's opinions.

Who was the 'he' referred to in your second para above? Service manager perhaps?

WLTP - leaseman

Indeed it was, Avant. Sorry not to be clear.

Quite. I had a lift from a colleague a year ago. He braked sharply at roundabouts, then accelerated rapidly, only to brake sharply on approaching traffic. Uncomfortable for passengers, and uses far more fuel.

Plus the loads/passenger numbers (including weight) they carry - variations in load makes a great deal of difference - not just the wight, but also how its carried - I suggested my parents take off their aged roof rack many years ago (on their old Escort) for the same reason many people who only occasionally use a roof box or suchlike should remove it unless its needed - the extra drag make a sizeable difference to the mpg.

I have always been 'able to do sums' and to keep accurate records. And I was pleasantly surprised to find that the MPG readout on my Pug agreed quite closely with the result of my sums. In this case it is not a matter of believing what you want to believe (it often is). Provided you believe the accuracy of your odometer and the pump at the petrol station, of course.

Since I bought my Skoda Roomster in late 2015 I've used a phone app called FuelLog. It consistently shows better consumption than the car's own readout.

So which one do you trust :-) ? I guess your app uses GPS rather than the car's odometer?

Think quoting a number is the problem - should have used the letter system as electrical appliances.

Have an hybrid and spend my time between NW (UK climate) and SE (Mediterranean) Spain - consistantly get 55mpg in the former and 59 in the latter area - because warmer temperatures are advantageous for alternative-fuelled vehicles. So what is the "real" mpg? Imagine the difference between Northern Norway and Southern Spain

WLTP - Leif

Warmer temperatures are advantageous for non hybrid cars too, as they get up to operating temperature faster, and the air is less dense.
