Conventional Automatic - retgwte

Anyone know the list of smal fiesta sized and focus sized cars which can be bought with conventional auto gearboxes, ie not DSG, MMT, CSV etc. Current new models.

Thanks

Mazda 2/3 would be my top pick here. These use a lightweight torque converter set up combined with a conventional normally aspirated petrol motor, neither of which is likely to cause any grief.

There’s also nothing to fear from Toyota’s CVT transmission as used in the Yaris and Auris. Plus the Hyundai i20 used a robust conventional torque converter system until mid 2018 when a new automated manual box was introduced.

Honda seem to have managed to get their current CVT boxes right too with both the Jazz and Civic so equipped. The last of the previous gen Civic makes an excellent used auto in 1.8 petrol form with again a conventional torque converter and a reputation for being bulletproof.

Vauxhall tend to stick with torque converter boxes with the Astra and Corsa offering good value used. Stick with the petrol motors and they should be fine though the 1.0 turbo is a bit of an unknown as yet. Just don’t expect it to be worth anything when you come to sell.
