(Readers of my previous sagas will know of my European exploits. Pierre the pirate mechanic features).

Just sorting out my summer schedule. Car has done 180k, but running well. Full service (trusted indy) in Marrch, passed MOT no advisories.

She's currently running on 225x45x17 (Jag OME wheels) after I bought the wheels from a local friend for £80 (for four). Previously she was on (Jag OME) 205x55x16. I changed because the 16s were a bit corroded etc.

You expect shorter life from wider lower profile tyres, of course and I confess that the 17s only cost £140 for four fitted so can't expect too much. They've been fine in use but now I find that the fronts are worn in the centre - almost as if they've been over-inflated - so I need to think about changing. (I run at 31 psi all round and check regularly).)

So here's my dilemma. Car is worth £145 on wbac (less admin and dings) so pactically zero. Much more than that to me. 16 wheels need blasting and painting (? better powder coating) at min £50 each, and I'd like to put all seasons tyes on. So say £500. Or, I just replace the two worn fronts (17s) with budget tyres and carry on.

Over the summer will be doing 3,000+ miles with several trips to East Angular and one to Andorra. Mixed use, but in France will be many miles at 85mph cruising.

Heart says get 16s done up, fit Cross Climates and hope for the best, i.e. car will do another 20k. Head and wallet says get two new 17 (budget) tyres.

Thoughts welcomed.

Why would you bother re-furbishing wheels on a hundred and fifty quid car?

You can get quite decent 225/45x17's for £50/60 each (four Falken A rated wet grip jobbies same size recently gone on daughter's Civic for that price), even if they only manage 12k miles on the front you would have to cover a lot of miles to make changing over to the 16's pay for itself.

That's the sort of rational thought I needed.

Best to swap new fronts with partially(but minimally) worn rears?

Could i borrow your big wooden spoon later Joe Gundy :-)

The accepted wisdom is to fit new tyres to the rear regardles of which wheels are driven, however i know how my cars handle and i have no doubt you do too, i'm also capable of correcting an oversteer and if push comes to shove i'll take an oversteer above a very unpleasant and not as easy to correct understeer every time ta very much.

So, generally despite being told in one size fits all parlance that new tyres must go on the back, if i do buy 2 new tyres (most rare because i rotate and both out cars are full time 4WD anyway) then they go on the drive wheels, if in the unlikely event one finds the handling not up to par one can soon swap them over.

Thanks GB for the cogent thoughts from an experienced driver who knows what he's talking about.

So off it'll be to my indy, new tyres on the front (and I'll probably have an oil/filter change as well just beacuse of the upcoming trips).

Cheers!
