well...
a few hours ago , my little car was nicked from out side here
ibb.co/kCsWuJ
and no one saw or heard anything ...

It's a peugeout 106, with 130,000 on the clock , and 21 years old
probably worth £100 tops.
ibb.co/ciHpWy

I've informed the police
(they asked if I wanted forensics doing on the car to help identify the culprits...£150 !!)

Do I need to inform the insurance yet, or at all, as I am not making any claim from them.

Why would someone nick such a cheap car?
Unbeknownst to them , in the boot, I had all my business stuff (worth £500)
and a full tank or petrol £70
and a personalised no. plate
(which the dvla wont release for a year if the car isn't found)
so, it'll cost me over £1000 to get back up and running

I wonder how they nick it, and where they drive it to..

What do you think would be wise for me to do?
wait a week...
get another 106
or I think my mate Gordon recommended a ldv.. which I could convert to a camper and go looking for work all over the uk , eire and even the EU.

The end of an era !!
ps Thanks for all the techie help with the little car, over the years.
Cheers
Liam

FFS. Gutted for you mate, I've seen your posts over time keeping the 106 going.

It's worse when something is stolen that you've put time and effort into.

You already know the model well so if it still suits your needs, grab another good example. You can always SORN it if you buy a camper

Peugeot 106 , 1987 , 1.1 petrol - 106 nicked - gordonbennet

I'm so sorry to hear that news Liam, you put lots of work into that car let alone all your kit vanishing with it.

If you get an older vehicle again, invest in a Stoplock Pro steering wheel lock and fit a secret switch that kills the low tension side.

Noooo, not an LDV if you want a van to make a camper out of find a Toyota Hiace, preferably with the 2.5 turboDiesel lump, its basically an old square indestructible RWD Hilux with a van body.

If you want another small car then yes another 106/Saxo makes sense because you'll be able to inspect one in seconds cos you know them inside out, but older Toyotas might be worth looking at too, Starlet is the smallest and there are some very good well cared for examples still about, Corolla is the next size up and probably one of the most reliable cars ever made, Celica different again and now far cheaper than they should be.

Much more modern and none the worse for it Aygo/107/C1's are getting cheap now whilst being easy to work on, and the for some reason unloved Citroen C2 in 1.4HDi form (no DPF) can run to staggering mileages and give genuine 60/70mpg economy.

Tough luck lad. I guess it won't be far away, but may have been burnt out by now. There can't be many like it, so the cops should be able to find it easily - if they try. But don't give up on it just yet. One lesson may be not to leave ANYTHING valuable in an unguarded vehicle.

Tough luck. I admire your enthusiasm for keeping Princess on the road and really hope someone nicked it to get home from the pub rather than put a match to it.

Yes you will have to tell insurance company although I'd wait a few days in case it turns up in one piece. You've reported it stolen, so it's official now.

If you are active on social media, it may be worth getting the news out there as it may be sitting quietly in a side street somewhere. If she is unharmed, it's unlikely to be reported very quickly as it will appear as just parked up.

Thank you all,
for allthe responses !

I've just got up..noon, and there was a message from the police to call them .
..be still, my beating heart :)
lol, I got all excited...which at my time of life is never a good thing :)

Anywho, all they wanted to do is give another reference number.

I'm going to cycle round the scally area later
and I was thinking of putting some a4 on lamposts too...like they do when pets...dogs/hipsters etc, go missing

It's a weird feeling when the car gets nicked,
I wallked and walked around for over an hour, trying to find it !
thinking it may have been on another street etc

Thanks Gordon for all the tip , I really appreciate it mate !
dunno why but I had you recommending a LDV, in my mind.
.. too many beers , sleeps, seniors moments , probably :)

I think , in thenext car, I'll also get a cheap smartfone and use a tracking app on it.
..so at least I can see where it went !

ps if it is being used as a drugs runner...it'll be the first time in it's life iot could be considered a "high" flyer :D

Just had a thought Liam. The photo you posted seems to show a single yellow line on the road.

Were there any parking restrictions in force (including residents parking permits)? Just wondering if the Traffic Wardens (or council Parking Attendants) have got your car lifted to the local pound.

The other reason I'm wondering if the authorities have lifted it, is that I'm pretty sure that a car which is 21 years old will have an immobiliser. Wouldn't have thought your average low life would be able to overcome it. If they were able to overcome the immobiliser, I would have thought they would have gone for a faster car.

In any case sorry to hear about your car.

Peugeot 106 , 1987 , 1.1 petrol - 106 nicked - liammcl

Thank you Fiesta owner
I double checked the times, and all was ok

and, the immobiliser !... I had thought about that too...

It was only when I sat down and thought about it... that it made no sense for someone to go through all that trouble to nick the car.

Also, if it had been towed they would've informed the police...

slowly but surely, it dawned on me
that in fact
I, was the weakest link :)

Anywho...
the car's in the dog house tonight ! :D

Guys, I truly apologise !!

I found the little drama Queen, about half an hour ago !!

I spent all day cycling around the local rogue hotspots...12 hours 70 miles
and on the way home, I thought I'd go back to the crime scene.

As I was going there... I thought
what's the probablities of....
Someone knicking a 21 year old , BRIGHT GREEN, car
How likely is it that no-one saw the car being tampered with and stolen, when there were 40 windows outside.
and how likely would thieves have the gall to steal it in such a visible place

So.... this time with the bike, I retraced my steps....
and something didn't add up !
there was a distinct break in the streets I dropped the leaflets off at..

so , I recalled what I did on the day !
and I did , indeed go back to the car to get my phone
I did, indeed sit in the car and had some crisps, and a drink of lucozade
however there was a niggling thought, that I got comfy, someone rang (handsfree)
and I decided to drive a little ways away, while I scoffed the crisps...
only 3 streets away, in an area I didn't know....

yes....you guessed it !

The little sod, I'll b***** kill it if it trys that again !

Many, many apologies !
and many, many thanks for all the replies...

I should've gone back on the push bike and re-run the area
as, the most likely thing was that I had moved the car, while half concentrating, half asleep. the move was 1/3 mile...or about 40 secs.

Just shows ya !

Thanks all

Having read the story - and seen the result, I too am pleased. But, as was suggested, I think I'd get one of those steering locks ... Stoplock PRO (not the standard, basic one). £44 on Amazon or one on Ebay at £14.85 plus a fiver P&P (currently no bids on it). I have two of the old "Longarm" locks and keep one in each car ... not to mention I have a couple of Diskloks in the garage for when I know I'm going to a dodgy area - but they've become pricey , at around a hundred pounds, and they are a bit unwieldy... it's not a problem fitting it but it's a big, heavy thing to have in the car and if you put it in the boot then you can't always be bothered to go and get it (yes, ridiculous, I know).

Peugeot 106 , 1987 , 1.1 petrol - 106 nicked - joegrundy

Relieved here also - I've become quite fond of this 'character' car (and of the obvious character of its owner).

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, I remember as a young dibble getting radio messages about cars just reported stolen - and going to look for them. We found quite a few and nicked a few thieves. But those were also the days when at the beginning of the shift we were briefed about stolen cars, wanted people, etc. Duly noted down and action taken. Different times now, of course.

I imagine you, and lots of us here, and quite a few real present day coppers who joined up to nick bad guys, would like to turn the clock back to those days when you wore the blue serge.

As KB mentions, regarding that StopLock Pro, i put a dab of oil on the lock mechanism and it's a delight to use, fitted and released in seconds.

"I imagine you, and lots of us here, and quite a few real present day coppers who joined up to nick bad guys, would like to turn the clock back to those days when you wore the blue serge."

One of the sad things I find when talking to still-serving former colleagues is just how much motivation has gone.

For example: driving a marked police car (not necessarily a 'traffic' car, could be a 'panda' - you were on show, highest driving standards expected (and trained for). Entitled to and expected to pull over drivers for bad driving (advice or prosecution).

Example: RTAs investigated and drivers prosecuted for due care/reckless driving (nowadays sorted by insurance companies on 'knock for knock').

Things have changed, and not for the better. In the small rural town where I live people show me countless dash-cam videos of careless/reckless/dangerous driving incidents. Years ago (not that long) the Old Bill would have been catching and prosecuting.

Peugeot 106 , 1987 , 1.1 petrol - 106 nicked - Andrew-T

One of the sad things I find when talking to still-serving former colleagues is just how much motivation has gone.

Widening the topic somewhat, I think part of it is a slowly shrinking sense of community, with a parallel growth of individual entitlement. One symptom is a reduction in volunteering, of many kinds.

I have been a member of an orienteering club for approaching 50 years. It's a minority sport which (like many others) depends on volunteers for staging events. These days most participants are over 50, with a small proportion of younger people who (if they stay around) will not be enough to keep it going. I am also in a choral society which is in a similar position, many well past pension age, with a few younger ones. I also volunteer at a heritage steam railway - same story again: the railway is a tourist attraction provided to amuse families, very few of whom consider getting involved.

When asked, the working generation mostly say they don't have time to spare. When I was in their position (growing our sport) we made the time available. Doesn't seem to happen now, more's the pity.

Peugeot 106 , 1987 , 1.1 petrol - 106 nicked - drd63

There are many more sports and leisure activities available now. It's up to us involved with activities we love and enjoy to make them attractive and relevant to subsequent generations. Taking steam as an example, this will be something that appeals to a generation who remember and have fond memories of steam trains, younger generations won't have that connection.

Anyway have strayed well off topic so glad the 106 has been found.

Our sense of community has changed. I made new friends through a fungi recording group via online discussions. We in effect did work unpaid for Kew Gardens. Similarly I find out about ice skating and ice hockey using online resources. Our coach goes out of his way to organise and help, and many of us also help out. For many of us our communities have expanded massively and I think this is especially true for the younger generation.

I live near a steam railway station, and it seems pretty popular to me. However, it might be that the key members of the trust are older. Then again, isn't that true with a lot of 'less glossy' activities, that they attract retired people?

ps with the stoplock pro, what's to stop a thief sawing through the steering wheel and cutting it out?

ps with the stoplock pro, what's to stop a thief sawing through the steering wheel and cutting it out?

Nothing in theory, other than with the design of the lock you can hook the hoops around one of the spokes, so the thief will have to cut two sections of outer wheel leaving him with nothing to steer, and if you happen to see him faffing about he might fail to catch that hammer you passed swiftly to him to help bend the cut wheel :-)

Before he's done that he should if he has any sense have tried to start it, and that where your hidden switch comes in, so he has to faff about hot wiring, plus the steering lock, more time exposed..

You cannot make a car thief proof, because if they really want it the usual untouchables will just HIAB it away, it's all about your car being more trouble than the others to nick.

Did I read that right, in that the police wanted to charge you 150 quid to run forensics on the car to catch the culprit? How stupid is that, surely their aim is to solve the crime and use the tools at their disposal to do it.

Ok so the car isn't worth much, but if it was used in a hit and run suddenly their lack of investigation looks very poor.

I had my Zephyr 6 stolen from work in 1970.

After 10 weeks of haggling, I got the insurance company to agree a payout which was a bit more than the car was worth, but rthe same day I had a call from Manchester Police to go collect it from Longsight Police Station.

It had been recovered a week after the theft and sat in their yard for 9 weeks, no charge at all (but I would have been better off with the insurance payout!)
