Looking for a new car - David-Joe

Hi guys, first time posting but often come her for car related info...

Basically, I'm looking to upgrade my 2005 Kia Rio to something slightly bigger. With 2 toddlers and another on the way we will need the space, though with a slim baby seat we can still fit all 3 in the Rio (which surprised me massively!)

Just wondering if you guys had any opinions, looking for something spacious and family friendly enough for the girlfriend and kids, but will keep me happy with performance and handling. I don't do much motorway miles etc other than weekends away here and there, but would preferably like a diesel again. Focus or Mondeo come to mind, looking between 2005-10 and somewhere between 1k and 2k, quite like the xsara Picasso's as well as the can be had in half decent nick for upwards of £500.

Any ideas are appreciated, thanks in advance!

Why would you want a diesel? It sounds as if your mileage isn't all that high, so stick to petrol. Older diesels can go very expensively wrong.

If you've been coming on here often, you'll have seen the advice often given that at this level of budget condition matters much more than make or model. If you want some sort of a steer, something Japanese and petrol-powered is a bit less of a risk. Or if you've liked your Rio, see if you can find a well-looked-after Kia Ceed 1.6 petrol: I think they came out in 2007 or thereabouts.

If your budget is £500, then buy on condition before anything else. Ideally wait till you have a bit more cash in your pocket and pick something up for a grand. In your position i'd be looking at cars like the Hyundai Sonata, (Hyundai/Kia are sister brands) such as this one:

Personally i'd say forget diesel, although you are in the realms of pre-dpf cars so less truble prone! Your best bet is to find something in particularly good nick being sold locally, but you tend to find bargains in the local paper, not auto trader...

I think the OPs budget is £1-2k, even so, that is a very small figure. Diesel should really be avoided. Focus or Mondeo would both be fine, as a petrol. But as has been mentioned, buy on condition, even the most reliable cars can be unreliable once down to this price level through neglectful owners.

Forget diesel at this money, they’re far more complex and much much more likely to go wrong. Actually I found the perfect answer to this problem while having a wee look through Gumtree earlier this morning. Pretty close to the perfect cheap used family car. Might not be near you but Japanese petrol powered models like the Civic and Mazda 3 are the best bet on your very tight budget. The origional Citroen Picasso is ok if you avoid the 1.6 diesels but they’re nowhere near as robust as the Japs and it lacks Isofix which both the Civic and Mazda have.

Thanks for the replies! The reason I want diesel is when i do go away, with 5 in the car and a boot filled with holiday stuff I still want decent-ish mpg and I feel diesel would fair better. I'm only looking at getting rid of this due to size and a boost dropping issue. Plus the tuning, more specifically remaps, tends to be much better bang for buck than petrol tuning. Oh also VED of course ??

I know something like a MK1 Leon pd130 can be had for this money. To clarify the budget it's basically as cheap as possible (like with the Picasso) but would be willing to save up to 2k. I do like the kia but I'm more looking for something that has tuning parts available so would be looking to stray more to a 'mainstream' model, though the Volvo diesels look particularly good. Hope this clears some bits up and the suggestions keep coming!

Apologies to the OP but we seem to have another case of someone wanting to live beyond their means. The idea of buying a highly complex turbo diesel for under £2k is bad enough but wanting to tune it is economic disaster waiting to happen. I’ll give you three words which come from my 20 or so years in the motor trade... keep it simple.

Best of wishes and goood luck!

Oh and just a suffix aimed at the ISOFIX point SLO76 pointed out (though the Picasso's do have ISOFIX as I have researched) we actually won't be using ISOFIX, just belted boosters and baby seat.

“though the Picasso's do have ISOFIX as I have researched”

First gen cars don’t, though late models post 2008-10 May have had it. The last one I sold was a 57 plate and it certainly didn’t have it.

"Plus the tuning, more specifically remaps, tends to be much better bang for buck than petrol tuning."

I'm sure you'll think I'm a killjoy, but buying a cheap car is risky enough without adding to the potential problems by tuning an engine that is already well-worn.

If you really must have a diesel, the VW Group 1.9 PD 115 or 130 is one of the better engines. Best to go for the Skoda Octavia, as the Leon is only slightly biogger than your Rio.

I see a Volvo diesel being mentioned. From experience I would definitely not buy one. There are many things to go wrong and would possibly cost a fortune.in repairs and maintenance.

as others have said, petrol and simple.

Seriously, i think the OP may be on the wrong forum!, remaps, tuning parts, £2k tops?!. If you want to buy yourself a (probably) high mileage diesel car, then tune it so you can let out your inner boy racer, that is entirely up to you. But you won't have much joy on this forum looking for someone to endorse such a foolhardy mission.

You have 2 toddlers and another on the way and you are prepared to spend a maximum of £2k. Under those circumstances you really want to be looking at what the safest car you can get is, but is also going to be reliable. And if that is all you can afford to spend on a car, well so be it, you just need to do the best you can in finding something decent, safe and reliable. But, you do seem to have extra money available for remaps and tuning equipment!. Given that, maybe you should include all you were planning to spend (on top of that £2k) to get a better car.

A diesel car at that price point, unless you are very lucky, could easily turn into a money pit and the repair costs (much higher than a n/a petrol) will wipe out any fuel saviings and then some.

If you were to up your budget a bit to include 'boy racer expenses', say £2.5k, you could get into something like this,

www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/20180202333...1

SAFE, fast enough, rides and handles brilliantly, spacious, big boot, etc, etc. BTW, you can get into this shape Mondeo for £2k, but it will have a little more miles which is no big deal.

Here are some other options;

www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/20180719860...1

The 2.0 would be more sensible, but you'd probably find this more appealing.

The Civic has an enormous cabin for its size, a big boot and reliablity.

What excellent advice. Makes forums invaluable , if people listen.

Buy a Mondeo - you won't get more car for £1-2K. Comfy, quick, well equipped and fairly reliable.

Looking for a new car - Metropolis.
I’d still say the Sonata above is a better bet!
Looking for a new car - badbusdriver

I have no problem with the Sonata at all. But as a family car, the extra practicality of a hatchback or estate would swing it for me.

Looking for a new car - Metropolis.
This is true, also less of a drivers car than the mondeo. Reliability is the main
plus point which swayed me towards the sonata, but I suppose with mondeo
being so popular means parts are likely cheaper when it does go wrong.

At the end of his thread he said... cars available from £500.

They WILL be a heap of trouble... esp if TDi's and such.

At the end of the OP's 1st post he specifically (and only) mentions Xsara Picasso's he has seen from £500, but earlier in that same post he says, albeit obscurely, that his budget is £1-2k. He then clarifies in a subsequent post that he would spend up to £2k. It is a moot point though, as even at £2k it really wouldn't be wise to buy diesel.

if you have todlers and a baby, sliding rear doors is essentiial for maximum ease of access.

Looking for a new car - Brit_in_Germany

Essential is going a bit far I'd say but with three little ones, boot space and easy access are key points. Maybe an S-Max would fit the bill.
