You don't say which engine, but it depends what you want. Size wise, the Yaris is on a par with the Corsa, but the Note is much more spacious, more like a Meriva. Between the Yaris and Corsa, i'd go with the Yaris, but if you need more space, the Note is the winner (as long as we are talking petrol engines mated to manual gearbox).

Only one choice for me...that's the Yaris.

Your so right i did, yaris 1.3, note 1.4 and the corsa 1.2, all petrol!! I think the corsa is a little weak but all chain driven engines which is what i'm also after, all manual too!! Thank you.

A chain driven engine is not the be all and end all it is made out to be. I have learned (on this forum) that not only can chain drives be more trouble than belt (such as VW TSI), but even on more reliable units, the reliablity only comes with proper regular servicing.

As for the Corsa being weak, it has pretty much exactly the same power as the Yaris, 84bhp vs 85bhp. It isn't that the Corsa is likely to be unreliable and I know of no particular faults with that engine, its just that, overall, the Yaris is likely to be more reliable.

Completely agree with the belts and chains, just fancied something a bit different ^^ Thanks

Our second car is a 2010 1.2 Corsa. I would not recommend it. Its quite well specced and drives quite well but it has been built down to a price and this shows. When I've done minor repairs it always feels tinny beneath the reasonable cosmetics.

On the plus side the faults we've had have not stopped it going and, if thats typical, I guess thats why they are seen as reasonably reliable. But we've had a succession of minor things such as the driver side wiper slapping the front pillar, jammed folding rear seat backs, collapsing drivers's seat, breaking door handle cables and two handbrake recalls. Googling shows these are all well-known issues. They smack of poor design and cost cutting.

As for the chain cam well ours has done 85k and something rattles or ticks irritatingly, being very audible in the cabin. The garage says its not unusual for them to make this noise and its not a sign of imminent failure. In contrast our previous belt-driven Astra ran almost inaudibly.

Finally the Corsa service interval is 20k miles or 12 months. So any ignoring the 12 months element may have been subject to lengthy service intervals.

Thank you for the lengthy reply!!

The tick is usually a camshaft cap coming lose - many were not torqued down properly at the factory - whip the cam cover off, torque the caps - job done in 20 minutes - leave it and the camshaft will snap - goodbye motor.

Steve thanks for the cap tip. I've never come across this advice despite googling about the noise and, as I said, asking the garage.

Right now I am in the land of tapas and fine sherries but I will look into it when we get back.

Difficult to decide without knowing the history or condition, but the Note or Yaris would most likely be the best choices, as everyone else has said. Personally, I'd put the Note on top due to its superior practicality and lower price.

Yes this was my feeling, but the corsa through a spanner in the works, pun intended. I have always been fond of the yaris, but the note has been like a underdog to me. I think i will see both and test drive them.

Regards

Completely understand the underdog bit!. My wife and i used to have a Ford Fusion, which was identical under the skin to the Fiesta, but in a bigger and more practical package. It never recieved anything other than complete indifference from the motoring press though. The Note is a very similar car (supermini based MPV) and a bit more practical than the Fusion due to it's longer wheelbase and sliding rear seats, but perhaps not as much fun to hustle down a country road (if that is of any importance). But the Note is also very straightforward mechanically so should give little or no bother. There is also the Yaris Verso, it's looks are somewhat 'challenging'(!), but if you can get past that you will find an extremely spacious, versatile and practical machine coupled with the legendary Toyota reliability.

Condition and history mean more than make and model at this money but if all things were equal the Yaris is the safest bet, especially the 1.3 petrol and the Note would be a close second with the Corsa dead last. But I'd still favour a well maintained Corsa than a tatty Yaris. Don't touch any of the diesels at this money.

I would go for the Note

The old shape note upto 2013 was an excellent car, with 2 great petrol engines.

It was much better than the piece of junk Note that replaced it.

I do hope you are not trying to provoke a certain forum member? ;)

But just to play devils advocate, Autotrader owners reviews score the old shape Note 4.2 out of 5 and the newer one 4.3 out of 5.

Just saying!

I bought an automatic Note1.6L in 2012 with 32K miles, it now has 97K miles and has been very reliable. I change the engine oil & filter every four months, the gearbox oil every 3 years and coolant every 2 years. Other bits and pieces I do as required and the car has been reliable, smooth and quiet to drive. The auto box is especially smooth and the engine is very quiet, even at speed. The interior is hard-wearing, easy to clean and spacious. However, the car is a bit dull and looks ugly from some angles Yaris or Note - yes, Corsa - NO!

Yaris or Note - yes, Corsa - NO!

The Corsa is decent, they are cheap to buy from 1 years old and for a GM product possibly the most reliable. I have seen plenty of Corsa’s at auction go into mega miles and had a family member who owned a 52 plate 1.2 petrol from 3 years old to 11 years old which never let them down.

Some great comments here. No I've gone off diesels from a CR dci Mégane, a great system but the CR just seems to have such high tolerances and seem to reach a point of going wrong quickly, it was a Delphi, and feel Bosch would be a better choice. Saying that just seen a Mégane I music so who knows.

Another vote here for the Note - great value , great car and uber reliable. My favorite is the 1.6 auto

Honda Jazz worth a look

Choice of cars,,, Corsa, Note, Yaris. - Ethan Edwards

Note had a 1.6 auto . Good car lots of room, comfy reliable. Not the prettiest but a great workhorse.

Yaris not nearly as roomy but adequate. Reliable economical a Nice place to be. I had the 1.5 Hybrid..driven the 1.33 and it's quite rapid. Heard the diesel isnt great.

CORSA i only have a second hand opinion of these, and after his engine self destucted (blew hole through piston) it wasnt complimentary. Other people probably love them.

Hope that helps.
