I was reading an article in June's Car magazine on the new Cullinan and can't help noticing just how ugly it is!. I mean, it really is and awful looking thing, not just in detail, but also its proportions. The article i read was by Stephen Bayley, someone with a diferent perspective to a motoring journo who's articles i have enjoyed immensely in various (usually classic) car magazines. He is quite clearly in despair over it's appearance, at one point commenting,

"Taste is the last threshold of shame. No one has ever said: 'Do you know, i wish i had worse taste'. It is in this context the new Rolls-Royce SUV excels so effortlessly"

He ends the article by quoting what is presumably some markeying blurb from Rolls-Royce about the Cullinan being 'a new defination of luxury', followed by leaving the last word to Coco Chanel,

"Luxury is not the opposite of poverty, it is the opposite of vulgarity"

Here is a link to an article by the esteemed Gavin Green with some pics for those who have not seen it yet.

I haven't clicked the link, reason being i've seen pics of the thing already and 'what has once been seen cannot be unseen' rules applies.

It's no more vulgar ugly than a Bentayga or the Maserati mini-bus pseudo 4x4 thing i saw the other day.

It is disgusting, truly vile, ugly beyond belief. Then again so are the other recent Rollers, as if designed by an amateur who does not know what he or she is doing. Brutal ‘go to hell’ external design, vulgar interior. But I suspect the target market is oligarchs and sheiks. People who want to say ‘up yours, you’re low life’ and flaunt their wealth and vulgarity.

Pity really otherwise I’d have placed an order ...

I wouldn't go that far, but it is just simply crude. No flair with the design, just two large boxes tacked onto each other and some brightwork. Very disappointing; like the Bentley. If you have to have a large and high car, then Range Rover do it much better, although they are all by definition awful.

The height of a regular Rolls-Royce is enough and they could always do an estate to increase load capacity.

I noticed no RR reviews by HJ. Hopefully he can pull his socks up and fill that void. :)

Wot - no individual adjustable centre arm rests? (standard in my 12yr old Audi) Call that comfortable? Sack the furniture designer.

Its a Rolls. If you want adjustable arm rests you can have them.

Regardless of what we think there will still be a waiting list for them.

Taste can be inversely proportional to wealth in some cases.

I suspect the UK is not its main target market.

I'm no fan of the cunnilingus but on the whole I do like the way Rolls Royce haven't gone down the jelly-mould route with their cars, all these identikit cars nowadays look like they've melted, even Land Rover are guilty of this! Something to be said for an angular car with a proper long bonnet that punches through the air like a breeze block. As has been mentioned, this isn't really for the UK market. Gone are the days when british landed gentry always had the latest rolls kept clean by the cheauffur, this particular model is more likely be found on an arab hunting expedition in a desert somewhere, what a life!

Looks like a truck but most of its ilk do. Price tag and good taste are not often linked these days. Probably not really for the UK market but the wannabe sector will doubtless lust after it.

Still, if you want one and can afford it .....

I believe North America is predicted to be the biggest market followed by China and Russia.

It looks a bit like a Kia Soul

I guess it's designed to appeal to people who already have a Phantom ot two in their stable. Given the context of the styling of other current R-R's, it's logical but far from beautiful. The detailing is OK but the overall proportions aren't pleasing, but then that's true of lots of other SUVs. Car styling in general is going through one of its periodic bad patches at the moment though.

Saw the article a couple of weeks ago and immediately thought of the 1970's Ford Bronco which was one ugly beast. Looks to me like Rolls have copied it.

Strange thing is I think that the looks of the Phantom and Ghost capture the escence of Rolls pretty well, much more so than some of the competition have done in their efforts to recreate their past greatness.
