Peugeot 2008 - Car for part exchange with (no) problem? - Kidney

Hi there

Hopefully I will clear up my mind before I will make any mistakes on this. Last thing I want is out myself in trouble but what if being honest cost me more money?

I got a car which I decided to part exchange for a newer one .It's 2012 2008 with 70k miles on the clock .it has vti engine which is well known as a oil drinker so it's mine. I'm "feeding " this car with about 0,5L of oil every 1000miles .I did my homework on this and I checked manual which clearly says that this consumption is within tolerance and normal, it's also says " it is a normal that these engine consumes oil and needs top ups between service intervals - check your engine regularly"

I spoke with dealership about it as well but for two years I heard only "it is as it should" recently they told me that if I want they can replace it but I will have to pay for it otherwise carry on topping up and drive. Very enough I think .

However if I will part exchange it do I suppose to shared about oil consumption which definetely would be a good reason to lowered the price on the car ? (We are talking about 3000 pounds in exchange) or wait till they ask if not then leave it .

At another hand are they would be able to reverse the deal if they find that out later on but still did not ask about it at the time of part exchanging it?

There is no sings of oil burn while the engine runs at all passed 3 MOT and 3 services in the past without any co2 emissions trouble . Apparently is due a nature of cambelt setup placed in the oil (yep), and because of that engine runs ecologic oil to not contaminate this cambelt and is very thin like a water so it goes through valves from time to time but also is burned.

Any advise on this ?

Thank you very much for your help.

You state the oil consumption is within the limits/tolerances in the manual, the main dealer says it is normal and the emissions/MoT are all ok, then there is no problem and I would not mention it. If you are asked directly you can say how much it uses and state that it is within limits.

Yes but at the begining of my car ownership I was shocked as well that car could drink so much of oil same as they may be. I spoke with few other owners of this car and oil consumption isn't the same for every single one . Just wonder if they could considered in any way as damaged engine due the fact they could get one with less oil consumption than mine.

However if I wont mention anything and they will find out themself are they will be allowed to reverse our deal?

For example dealership gave me an option to replace that engine if I'm not happy with regular oil top ups so what if they will contact them and obtain that offer and then may say : dealership told us you could fix that problem but you did not

Or they will sell that car to someone who will not check oil level at all which may cause serious engine damages after few months and then they will come back to me and say : engine was damaged and we were not aware of it as you did not say about any oil consumption at all

I think it's a very tricky thing as I know people who are not interested in any manuals of the cars at all while I'm reading them from page 1 to last to make sure im fully aware of the new car nature.

And I asked part exchange side about what kind of checks they will be doing as this is my first time of p/e and they told me that they will only simply drive it for about 5 miles to see if it drives and that's it. You can't really catch up a lot of things after a drive for about 5 miles.

I really took care of this car .there is no any advisories in current MOT or in the past at all

I think I'm just worried to much but this is my first time when I'm part exchanging the car and simply not looking for any trouble but also not looking to be ripped off for something which is considered as a normal thing. I got milion scenarios in my head "how it could be" while some people just simply dealing with it and don't care :x

Whe I traded in our Jazz, which had started to make a gearbox whine, I was completely honest with the salesman. He didn't knock anything off - he said it was just going to auction anyway.

Kidney I see that your messages are overnight UK time. Are you in the UK? If you are the advice given by the others is correct. You are not required to list the faults on a car you are trading in to a dealer. They are the experts and the amount they offer reflects the fact that the car is no longer new and perfect. You must however answer any questions they ask truthfully.

The claims made by car makers that oil consumption is within limits are often very high in eyes of the customer. If yours is within these limits you have no problem in trading it in. If you are worried about the subsequent owner that buys it from the dealer then there is nothing you can do. If you tell the dealer that it consumes oil they will use it an excuse to reduce what they pay you but will not actually do anything to the car before passing it on to a customer or auction. After all they will regard the consumption as within limits.

If you are not in the UK then other factors may apply.

I wouldn't give this seemingly quite reasonable oil consumption another thought, they don't think its excessive and neither do i, if it's not puffing smoke don't worry.

What i would do however is go online and visit the several car buying websites and see if you can get somewhere near the trade in value for your present car as a simple straight sale (say nothing about the oil consuption but be totally honest in the description of overall condition), then see what deals you can find for your next car as a straight purchase, and then do the maths.

Thank you all for your replies .

So I will just simply part exchanged. If they come back to me I will simply send them back to the service book as I'm not mechanically qualified and they had a chance to do their inspection .if they wont ask about oil I would not mention it. When they ask what is wrong with the car I would say that it seems fine to me. However if they contact my dealership and they will told them that I had an offer of engine replacement to resolve oil consumption which anytime I asked (in the past two years) was "okay" for that dealership then I could be in trouble.

last message I received from a dealership regarding my oil consumption was :

We checked your engine and we found that is consuming about 1L of oil every 2000miles and you can do three things on that

Either carry on toppings like u used to

Replace the engine and pay

Part exchange that car

Im English night shift owl thats why I'm writing so early in the mornings :)

I can remember when a pint (568cc) every thousand miles was regarded as low side of normal!!

As others say assume this is UK.

My experience is that salesman (ie not a technician) will drive car offered as PX for a mile or so. Presumably he is taught to check basic stuff like warning lights, steering full and free, clutch, gearbox and brakes all OK.

A car at that age/mileage is probably going to auction with no warranty from the dealer and no comeback to you except for perhaps misrepresentation over ownership.

Peugeot 2008 - Car for part exchange with (no) problem? - catsdad
Kidney, you are clearly a very honest person but you are worrying too much and maybe over-thinking. The car uses oil but you have established that its within manufacturer limits. If as you say its characteristic of the model then you have even less reason to worry about trading it in. The legal position is that the dealer is the expert and is expected to assess a car accordingly, characteristics and all.

Remember most dealers have no more interest in the cars they accept as trade-ins than a supermarket has in a can of beans. Its just a commodity in which they have no emotional interest. Whether they sell it to a customer or pack it off to auction they will forget about it the moment it leaves the premises. In the event of a subsequent problem they will not conduct an investigation into the car's history. Even if they did they would find it was within spec when you had it.

As to "being in trouble", you took one of the garage's recommended courses of action in keeping it topped up. In the highly unlikely event their advice came to light then I can see no issue there.

Peugeot 2008 - Car for part exchange with (no) problem? - Kidney

Thank You catsdad .This is the answer I was looking for .personally this is not normal even for me to top up so much of oil that's why I'm getting so worried about it . I chased dealer two years as I thought I'm under some rights to sort this out but only think I heard was "it is fine" currently when it comes to part exchange I was just scared that somebody would be chasing me up for another two years like I did :)

No worries then. I will top it up for them and overall polish the car and give it a go for a part exchange

Peugeot 2008 - Car for part exchange with (no) problem? - Kidney

I'm still surprised that all of you saying that car from 2012 will be going to auction as I would consider to buy car like this from a dealer few years back. 66k on the clock it is not much really

Peugeot 2008 - Car for part exchange with (no) problem? - Gibbo_Wirral

I think the oil consumption varies depending on engine size and driving use and engine temps. I find mine needs topping up more if I do longer runs than the usual short commute.

Peugeot 2008 - Car for part exchange with (no) problem? - Kidney

gibbo_viral. Peugeot as well?:) What is your consumption ?

Peugeot 2008 - Car for part exchange with (no) problem? - Gibbo_Wirral

Yep, 2008 1.4 308.

Usually 1/2 litre per 1000 miles, but it does vary.

Peugeot 2008 - Car for part exchange with (no) problem? - Kidney

Well yesterday I topped up 1,5L after 800miles but I did that 800miles on cruise control driving 62mph .(long journey) so it is vary and scary at once as it contains 3 or 4 L of oil in total.

When mine starts drinking oil you can sometimes feel it as engine shakes more and it's not smooth as usual.

It depends on what sort of dealer you're going to sell it to. If you're trading the Peugeot in for a brand new car, you'll see that most ofnbthe cars on th forecourt are less than three years old.

But if you're buying a used car, the ages of cars will vary much more. It'll depend on whether the dealer thinks they can sell the trade-in for a profit.

Peugeot 2008 - Car for part exchange with (no) problem? - John F

That seems a high consumption for such a small engine. My records show that at 65,000m our 1.6 Focus Zetec required only 500mls top-up between its 12,000m service interval. Allowing for usage (oil is filled to half-way-4litres exactly- and changed when at or just below the minimum mark) that's around 1litre per 10,000m. Even now at double the mileage (approaching 131,000), it requires only 4 x 500mls between changes, approx 1litre every 4000m. Sadly, that means a 5 litre can can no longer last till the next change!

Perhaps it is because, in the search for economy, pistons are a slightly looser fit and oil is thinner? If so, garages must get a constant succession of burnt out engines from careless owners!

I believe for similar sized engines 1litre per 1000km is quoted as acceptable.

Peugeot 2008 - Car for part exchange with (no) problem? - Kidney

Thing is because it is have an cambelt drawn in the oil (you can see cambelt through oil top up cap) its uses some ecologic oil which is thin like a water. Still 5w30 but looks like a water. Since I bought a car im facing oil consumption issues on regular basis. When I drove to Amsterdam and back which was about 1000miles in two days I had to put in 1L straight to make it right to the top of the dipstick

It’s a Peugeot... trade doesn’t trust them these days and for good reason. Time will tell if the latest range are as improved as the appear to be. Only mint low(ish) mileage examples will be retained by new car dealers.

Yet it will be bought and sold by a trader.

Peugeot dealers only put very modern stock on their forecourts. My local one has nothing older than a 16 plate.

Peugeot 2008 - Car for part exchange with (no) problem? - SLO76
Relax regarding part exchanging it. It’s down to the so called professional to asses and correctly value it and with a 70k mileage any Peugeot will be punted straight to auction these days, they’re simply not robust things and few larger dealers would risk retailing it.

The salesman will usually ignore your admission in search of sealing a deal anyway and omit to tell his gaffer when having it valued. If it flags up later he simply states that he never noticed.

On the order form check for any clauses stating that the car has no faults and if you have to sign such a thing do it with an written statement saying “to my best knowledge at time of sale” or “sold as seen” or if it’s a separate section of the form or another form altogether sign it with a blatantly different signature from your own so it could be argued that you never signed it. But at the end of the day a court would look dimly on any dealer coming back to a punter on this and I’ve never encountered it myself or attempted it on the very few occasions where I’ve been caught out. It was my fault for not checking it thoroughly,

Ok so I went to a first dealer and after inspection I had an offer of £2800 pounds for my car without even mentioning about oil consumption . I did not sign any paperwork and said that I will think about it then left the place .

Same day, few hours later I phoned up my dealership where I purchased that car and mentioned that I'm going through part exchange and wonder if new owner / dealership could claim return or deal reverse due "in my eyes" excessive oil consumption which dealership considered as a normal anytime I asked. Dealership decided to part exchange it for me and give me (get for me) any car i want .Does not have to be another Peugeot as this company owns more dealership brands. In return they told me they will pay my car off without any inspection for 3200£ which is much more then £2800 offered in previous place (just thinking why is that? Is it dealership worried about my oil consumption concerns and they are not normal like they previously stated?)

However I contacted second dealership to say that I'm not going to part exchange my car as simply got better offer given £3200 for my car and I'm going to part exchange with a better deal.

Second dealership told me that they are not happy about it as they were first in the que for it (lol), and I should come back to them as they are willing to pay me same amount £3200 pounds for it and they simply made a mistake on inspection to give me such a low price .

I decided to part exchange it with a dealer i got this car from as he is aware of oil issues and I will save the hassle on this. Another thing is I can see that previous one simply tried to rip me off on the price and he can go to f... Himself now.

I think problem is solved. Thank You for your help guys.

“ Is it dealership worried about my oil consumption concerns and they are not normal like they previously stated?)”

Nope, they just don’t care as it will be heading straight to auction. Stop overthinking this. You’re part exchanging a car, the bulk of used cars at 70,000 miles have faults which owners won’t tell the dealer about. We know this, it’s our job to properly asses it. Relax and remember that the part exchange price is largely irrelevant. If you’re getting £400 at one dealer but their car is £500 dearer then you’re £100 worse off, it’s the cost to change which is important and equally so is the rate they charge for any finance you require. The high street banks are almost always far far cheaper unless it’s a manufacturer sponsored rate which is mostly only available on new cars. Look at the full picture before buying rather than fixating in part exchange prices.
Peugeot 2008 - Car for part exchange with (no) problem? - Scirocco

There really was no problem. Any comeback from a future buyer would be on the dealer not you, and as you said it was already in the manufacturer tolerances.

It's refreshing to hear of an honest person but you'll put yourself at the mercy of rip off dealerships if you're too open, most would surely knock a few hundred off the trade in price and sell it to auction anyway - do you think they'd declare the high oil consumption? Absolutely not.

The last three used cars I've bought, all manufacturer approved have had numerous faults. That's up to the dealer to put right not the previous owner

Peugeot 2008 - Car for part exchange with (no) problem? - TheGentlemanThug

Would you not consider selling it privately? It may not appeal to a dealer, but a private buyer could well be swayed. Considering SUVs are sold mostly on style, I wouldn't have thought it would be too difficult to find a buyer.

Being a cash buyer gives you more room to haggle for a new car as well.
