Settle an argument please.

Mate drove past a speed camera van, legal speed, but noticed that the man in blue was sitting in the drivers seat. Subsequent argument was whether there would have been anyone on the camera because they don't go round in pairs?

Anyone know for sure?

Possibly, possibly not. Sometimes they work alone, sometimes they don't!

In my experience it's a one-man job. Sounds like he was about to move to another location.

Normally you can see the operator through the window/door at back/side. Also it's usually a civilian not a proper police officer.

With a hedghog you can see the pricks on the outside.

If it wasn't for pricks on the inside of cars the police speed checks wouldn't be necessary !

None!

There's a video on YouTube where someone walks up to a "Police" speed camera van and challenges the occupants by asking them whether they are police officers because, on the outside of their van, it says "Cheshire Police" or whatever the county happens to be:

These vans are operated by civilian operators not police officers. In the example I've given, in the end, actual police officers were called.
