Pothole destroyed tyre - Leif

Yesterday there was a diversion through country lanes to avoid the Wickham horse fair. Anyway, I hit a huge pothole. I heard and felt the impact and within seconds the tyre pressure monitor warning went off. A mile on I found a side road where I could change the tyre, which was flat as a pancake. I photographed the pothole today, it's 5" deep and 1m (1 yard) long. I will try to claim against the council. I only hope the beasty didn't do unseen damage to the wheel or the suspension. I must have had 6 or 7 punctures over the last 6 years. This is the second this year, the previous one being due to a large screw in a front tyre.

Thank you. Nearby potholes have been notified, but not the one I hit.

The road between Denmead and Southwick was part of my alternative route to work. Haven't "enjoyed" the road since I hit a pothole at the road edge around 10 years ago. Some of those roads are fairly narrow for two cars to pass forcing you to use the full road width and risk hitting the crumbling edge.

Same here in Lincolnshire. Part of my commute included a narrow road on a blind corner that was littered with potholes and the only way to avoid them was to drive on the other side. If someone was coming the other way you'd have to hope they weren't going too fast.

Still, they were filled in after about five weeks. <sarcastic eye roll>

Try the county council's website as they may have a road fault reporting system, so as long as someone has reported the fault 2 days or more before your incident, the council is liable for any damage caused as long as the pothole couldn't be reasonably avoided.

Really nasty one in Basingstoke right down the middle of a dual carriageway...could be a big problem if a motorbike hit it...been there weeks. Is it difficult to repair a pothole...anyone know?

Not especially, but any long-lasting repair requires time and money, and probably obstructs traffic for longer. So we usually get a quick patch. It may take weeks because [a] there is a large backlog and [b] repairs on major roads take priority over lesser roads.

When I report a pothole, I always put “Risk of injury or Death” it appears to focus the councils minds, the potholes are usually repaired within a couple of days.
