Hyundai Tucson 1.6 GDi Blue Drive SE Nav 5dr 2WD - Negotiating a discount on a used Hyundai Tucson - Scott Stevens

Hello,

I'm about to buy my first car and I'm completely clueless when it comes to the whole used car buying process!

I quite like the Hyundai Tucson 1.6 GDi Blue Drive SE Nav 5dr 2WD (petrol, manual), 2017 model.

I've seen some advertised for approx £17,300 with 7,000-10,000 miles, reversing camera and heated front seats etc. Example in link below.

I'm just wondering what price I should aim to strike a hard bargain on? And if it's worth asking for anything else to be thrown in as part of the deal?

Anything else I should check or ask for at the same time?

I'm not trading in and I'm a cash buyer.

Thanks

Scott

Since it is so new, the first thing to do is check all the broker’s - DriveTheDeal.com etc - and make sure you can’t get new for the same price, or a little more. There is a car buying guide on this website.

Good advice to check broker prices.

Also do some research into Arnold Clark and see if you are happy with some of the customer feedback.

Chances are it is an ex day rent car BUT just ask who the former owner was - they tend to say it was a fleet car etc etc Registration plate says Essex

It might say 1 owner car BUT had a 100 drivers. - what is it doing in Edinburgh? Fleet sale@ auction.

Ex day rent cars are not necessarily bad, I have bought 2 & both were good cars sold at 90K miles.

Have a look at Motorpoint - ex day rent cars abound & they tend to be less than Franchise garages. AC reputation is chequered - one bad experience & I would not buy again.

save about £1500 Vs AC

Do not pay admin charge, preparation charge @ Motorpoint - If you see a car you like @ MP say you will pay the screen charge & no more - they will say you need to pay the "extras" - get up out of the seat & walk to the door - save £200 for walking 10 yards!

Hyundai fleets are registered in Essex - probably their port of arrival.

Lots end up with Enterprise car hire. Ask to see the V5 to confirm.

Broadspeed currently sell the Tucson with that engine and trim for £21,640, so the price you've found sounds about right to me. That said, you're a cash buyer in a popular segment of the market buying a diesel-engined car, so you've plenty of cards to play. Even more so if you're needing finance.

The Tucson 1.6GDI is a petrol.

Well b***** me, so it is; my mistake.

I see 'D' in the engine name and immediately assume diesel. :D

Some great advice, many thanks for the input.

I checked out DriveTheDeal.com and couldn't find any Hyundai's.

Motorpoint had some good deals but not in the colour I want.

Only seem to have it in black. Love the look of the blue.

I had another look on autotrader and there are some 2018 options for only an extra £1-£1.5k with delivery mileage - only 9 miles!

Is there anything to watch out for with these kind of cars? It's basically brand new with so few miles.

I have a Sportage with the same engine, it's basically the same car underneath. One thing I would say is it's no ball of fire and the fuel economy isn't that good. That said, I like it

As mentioned in an earlier post I like the colour of Tucson (blue) adverstised with AC Edinburgh. It is however about £1,300 more than a similar model / mileage advertised at Motorpoint, but in a less desirable colour.

Do you think AC would price match the MP price (£16k, down from £17.3k)? Is it worth paying a bit more to AC becuase of their after sales support, which might be better than MP?

Is it even worth trying to negotiate with MP? What's the best you are likely to negotiate with them, no admin fee and that's it?
