That (free) serivce has been available from the DVSA for a while now. Very handy it is too if you are as forgetful as i am!. And you get at least 2 but possibly 3 reminders, first being (i think) more than a month before the due date, so you have plenty of time to organise it. Mine was due on the 14th of this month but done on the 1st as i had some time off.

Would be nice if it works. My MOT shows on the HJ site as expired last month. I know (because I've checked it on DVLA site directly) that the new MOT is correctly recorded on there
