The possibilities are endless. How about...'He's behind you' . Could bring back the 'bird exhaust whistle' for hybrids.

That's the way to do it !!!

I find that a lot of people now walk around with the usual 'life support' system of earphone entertainment plugged in. They have no idea of their surrounding or spacial awareness because they are cut off from all the usual stimulous that the brain picks up and acts upon. It is a wonder there are not more incidents reported. Personally, if it was found that these earplug systems contributed to an accident then I would be inclined to reduce or void their right to claim compensation through insurance.

Even if your not wearing earphones/headphones, EVs, and hybrids without engine running are almost silent to the point your unlikely to hear them coming, so they do need some sort of added noise so that you can

they have been silent for years so its about time they sorted it out

While it's not something I would do, I don't think we can ban it as some people are deaf and we can't ban them.

Daughter had a crash because she had the car stereo wound up and couldn't hear the other car.

I spotted an ambulance behind me too late whilst I was driving an empty, diesel, panel van with no rear windows. Reckon I wouldn't have heard a nuclear bomb going off in that thing.

Odd, I thought everyone knew about this as its been a talking point for years, it has nothing to do with wearing headphones, only how quiet some cars are the lack of noise means people cannot hear the motor

After I bought my first Civic 1.8 I parked outside a shop and someone trying to cross the road asked if the car was electric as it was so quiet, cars have become quieter as time has gone on so its not surprising

It's affected cyclists for years - we're not only silent, but apparently invisible also (and yes, I know we're hated by car drivers :-) )

That might have something to do with daft manoeuvres they make, hate has nothing to do with it, cyclists in most cases are there own worst enemy, if drivers made the silly manoeuvres cyclists do there would be more accidents

so next time a cyclist swerves off a path or out of a cycle lane, consider the fact cars cannot do the same to get out of a cyclists way(one example)!

Most cyclists are fine...you seem to have a sweeping generalisation...plenty of car drivers so silly things and do have accidents aswell.

I was trying to post in the context that some road users (pedestrians crossing the road especially ) do so without looking - they may listen and then cross without looking.

The majority of car drivers do treat cyclists with care - I wouldn't cycle on our roads otherwise.

This story here: www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-44066083 is one way that city centre congestion/pollution could be relieved with better access to cycles.

pedestrians have been doing that for years so its nothing new, you just have to be extra carefull when going through highly populated roads or close to schools

maybe pedestrians could use some education about how quiet and dangerous evs are, though I doubt they will listen

Surely you agree that if a person is wearing headphones and listening to music they are cut off from the usual awareness of their surroundings. Electric cars are virtually silent, but with headphones engaged so is everything else too. It simply exacerbates the problem.

I agree, but as electric/hybrids are silent how can headphones exacerbate the problem there is no sound to hear, so the wearer of headphones should look around, which is the whole point that they don`t

But blind and partially sighted people would need a sound from a car to know where the car is....a point also noted about emergency vehicles, the warning sound of them coming gives no indication of direction they are coming from, untill you see the flashing lights
