Strange how they are trying to reduce pollution in london but have now given the go ahead for a new tunnel

I can think of better ways to spend the money as I suspect many can

I thought they wanted a tunnel further downstream as well, as well as the 3rd dartford crossings further downstream from the current tunnels..

Be interesting how this pans out WRT tolls.

Up here in the frozen north they build a new Mersey crossing at £2 a pop then put the same fee on the old bridge which has been free to cross since it was opened in 1961.

We have the now editor of the LES to thank for adding £20 a week to our taxed income expenditure just to get to work and back.

If this lot don't get their act together soon and sort Brexit out one way or another, we'll just need a new road allowing us all to drive over the edge of a high cliff.

can't even bear to think how much tax has been spent (wasted) on the CS after Dave's great referendum!

Yet more expenditure on infrastructure for the south east while the rest of the country gets nothing.
I for one was against the 2012 olympics being held in London because as I feared, the cost was millions and no benefit was seen to the midlands or to the north.

Wrangler, apart from the new Mersey Tunnel referred to above, new Forth Rd Bridge etc etc, infrastructure spending per capita or as a percentage of tax take is probably lower in the south east than most other regions. Like it or not the 2012 Olympics were a huge success because they were in London. The decision to hold them in London was made by an international committee btw.

the impact of the 2012 Olympics was nationwide, everyone in the UK benefited from the feel good factor it generated...the Gamesmaker volunteers were drawn from across the UK (I was one of them), the area in the unfashionable east of London around the venue was in dire need of regeneration, there was much private investment as well, the legacy includes some world class sports venues, a lovely park and more. Perhaps the Manchester, Glasgow and future Birmingham Commenwealth Games are worthy if smaller comparisons.

Unfortunately, this new tunnel (which is just a few miles along from Stratford) cannot be considered in the same way.

IPPR North annual analysis shows Yorkshire and the Humber will get £190 per head, North East £220, North West £680 and London £1,940 per head for transport from 2016/17 onwards – see notes

Totally agree, London gets more and more, most of the main international sports events are there..football, Wimbledon, Twickenham...add your own suggestions here. Never understood why when Midlands or Northern football teams make a playoff final or cup final they traipse all the way to Wembley with thousands of fans.

should be building the M25 / Dartford crossing relief road first, the benefit will be more national for all motorists travelling to / from Kent and M11 / M1 / A1 etc and (cynic here) the tolls raised would generate funds for spending elsewhere

If it relieves the Blackwall Tunnel congestion it will solve some pollution problems. Strange that its only 2 lanes with 1 lane being a bus lane.

There doesn't seem to be any real joined up transport thinking in this country.

Costs me nearly £60 to get to London in the AM on the train from home but if i drive 30 miles i can do it for £12 odd. Parking at the stations is too limited though because they built a block of flats on the carpark.

Lastest silly idea is to build a railway level crossing over the main north south llnk road to Hastings (A21) and its only a hobby steam train service!

Maybe somebody got a nice pension contribution for selling the car park with planning permission? Common sence doesn't come into it in this country, everything is the "want it now variety" and damn the consequences.

When did any goverment plan beyond getting voted-in again in five years time?

Why is that a problem? The plans to rebuild Bodiam to Robertsbridge railway line go back 20 years.

As you point out, calling it a 'hobby' service, it is in fact a tourist railway and situated in a popular part of the area's tourist trail. Being tourist, the gates/barriers are unliklely to be closed to traffic at peak/rush hour times Mon-Fri, and if they are it will be for a couple of minutes at most. Building a bridge isnt possible because of the A21 roundabout.

It a couple of minutes so much of a hardship?
