Do manufacturers, Seat in this case, routinely put dye in the air con system in the factory or is it an aftermarket thing when you get a regas? Son's climate has recently stopped working and I can't see any signs of a leak under UV.

Also, on this model and I believe other VAG cars, the controls flash to indicate a fault on start up. If it is just a regas required, will the fault code disappear automatically or will VAG Com be needed?

I don't know of any car makers that factory fill their a/c systems with uv dye.Its only the aftermarket that does. Some Vag models do have a flashing climate panel to indicate a fault in the system ,but may not neccessarily indicate a low gas charge. An Ibiza of this age is likely to have a leaking condensor rad or a faulty a/c pump. Vagcom (now Vcds)is an excellent tool to interogate the system, but there are plenty of others on the market that can check the system.

If your 12 year old car's air conditioning was still working properly having never previously been re-gassed then I am amazed. All A/C systems lose refrigerant over time. Contact an A/C specialist, not any old local garage, who will re-gas it and test the system. They'll also be the best people to advise you on any necessary repairs. VCDS can be used to test the components of the climate control system, but it won't tell you it's low on gas, or if you have a leak.

My son has had the car for two years and no idea if or when it may have been re-gased.

VCDS may show up a pressure switch "fault" which may be lack of refrigerant rather than a duff sensor, or so I have read.

I've used a very good mobile air con specialist in the past. Did a good job, but he was far from cheap. A local garage recharged my other son's Fiesta last year for £30. I am inclined to go there this time as if it fixes then great, if not, time to spend more money with the specialist.

You are right, vcds will show a low pressure fault code, but needs to be checked with a gauge for verification.Dont think you are going to get a regas for £30 this year, the refrigerant gas has tripled in price since last year.

Out of interest elekie, I've noticed 1234yf re-gas is much more expensive. Is that just the cost of the gas, or is different equipment required? Also, why do some places not do hybrids?

Ibiza 2006 - Climate Control - elekie&a/c doctor

Cars built from aroumd 2016 (some earlier) use the new Yf gas which is around £100 per kilo. Majority of cars have a fill charge of approx 500 gms. You need dedicated equipment to prevent cross contamination of the gas . Although operation is the same, the coulpling ports are different. As for hybrids, although the gas is the same, the iubticant is specific because the a/c compressors are electric motors rather than belt driven from the engine.Any contamination with incorrect oil is enough to reduce the integrity of the air con pump/motor. I guess this is too involved for most workshops dealing with a/c repairs.macsworldwide.wordpress.com/2012/03/30/use-caution.../

Update. No fault codes were recorded so took it into ATS today for a re-gas. £29.50 via a Groupon deal. They were honest enough to say they're not experts and it just gets hooked up to the machine. Working well at present and we'll just have to see how long it lasts.
