Looking at a 17 plate 2.0tdi 150 bdo Skoda Superb estate in L and k spec. As the car was registered after the 1st April it falls under the new tax rules whic I believe is £140 a year?. Is this the standard rate that I will pay from now onwards or could it potentially change? It’s a great car but I have considered finding a 66 plate!
Personally speaking, it was a bad change for the average motorist and wholy designed to raise revenue for the Treasury (what. a. surprise). If you have the opportunity, try and source a 17 plate model registered between March 1st and 31st, as you get the benefit of the new reg over a 66 plate, but stil the lower VED, which changed on 1st April 2017.
You may find that owners have got wise to this and jack the price up accordingly, as it could save new owners anywhere from £5 to over £100 per year in VED, for cars that are essentially identical and registered only a month (or less) apart. Also worth doing for some cars had been revised at that time, such as the Mazda3, where the changes came into effect in Nov/Dec. I'm sure a few others at least fall into this category as well, which makes them worth more (assuming the changes were for the better!).
