I'll believe it if and when independent testing proves it, unlike the Bosch (if I recall correctly) 'emissions systems' in the 'Dieselgate' VAG cars that 'supposedly had' ultra low emissions. Cynical, yes, but with good reason. Personally speaking, I think this is as much a PR exrecise as anything revolutionary (it would be a headline on the TV news and all over the motoring press if it was).

Reducing NOx is great, but it still doesn't get rid of all the other particulates that diesel cars emit in greater qualtities than petrol engined ones...

Tested on a VW Golf, so the results are completely reliable :-)

No mention of working with cold engines.. I wonder why not?

No mention of working with cold engines.. I wonder why not?

they did......

It is effective as soon as a car is started and works at all engine speeds, allowing it to operate effectively both when engines are cold, and during urban driving. The system is also effective when drivers accelerate quickly.

Nothing about reliability though. Did they say what effect the new system has on mpg, other emissions, use of comsumables (like adblue) and performance?

Given its their own testing on a brand new VAG car (given the track record of both, in my opinion), I will reserve judgement until fully independent scientific studies are done that aren't paid for by either Bosch or VAG.

What was the company who supplied the engine management systems and software to VW pre-'dieselgate'?????

Wasnt it a German company beginning with B....? :)

Nor is it likely to do anything about the other form of diesel pollution - noise.

If Bosch's technology can be applied to existing vehicles, then it would be very useful but we're nearing the end of the road for the internal combustion engine anyway as the industry cranks up the move to electric vehicles.

I think there's a lot of uncertainty in the car market at the moment. As well as the nation's economy, there could be other factors deterring people from buying at the moment. They don't know what the future holds for diesels. Or they might be interested in an electric car in the next year or two but with the rate of change in that sector they might get something with twice the range and charges twice as quickly, all for the same price, in 2 years, so best to hang on to the old diesel for now!

its supposed to give up to 4% better fuel economy and reduce all emissions inc particulates by using a higher electric current heater in the cat to burn off particulas faster, also a more efficient turbo

I gather journalists have been testing a car in germany but article had been cut short for some reason?

Depends on cost. It may work but will it push the cost of a diesel motor out of contention, particularly on small to medium cars?

Like automated manual gearboxes some technology just can’t be made reliably and cheap enough for mainstream cars. We all know how troublesome such gearboxes can be in cars but I drive buses fitted with them that cover millions of miles in their lives yet the boxes rarely if ever give any trouble. Difference is that cost and weight restrictions are less of a problem on trucks, buses and tractors which have been using them for years. Wonder if this tech will be the same.

This is good for the short-to-mid term but we all know the future is EV. My guess is that Bosch had to sweat blood working with VAG to get the various retro 'fixes' designed and rolled-out, and in the course of the this took the data and learnings to come up with this latest initiative. It's also a 'mea culpa' on the part pf Bosch-did they really believe VAG were going to use the program Bosch designed in a test-only environment.......?

Another tale of woe this morning - colleague who thought a diesel Zafira was a good idea 2.5 years ago to "save money" on fuel.

They car never gets a decent run and is now showing signs of the DPF being choked to a premature death.

They said thats why they have designed this system as EVs are a few years from becoming mainstream, gives them time to work on electric cars
