Volkswagen Golf 2016 TDI - Diesel Care Tips? - Radam87

Hi all

I am in the process of buying a Golf TDI and wondered what is recommended, other than good distance runs at speed such as motorway journeys,in order to keep it in good working form and avoid costly repairs?

Specialst fuels/cleaning additives? Anything really?

First, make sure your 'normal' driving type is correct for a modern diesel. With the 1.4 petrols getting 45+mpg (a couple of regular contributors to the forum have them, specifically on Skodas) if you're regularly having to do 'extra' journeys to keep the DPF clean then the diesel car might work out more expensive to run.

HJ himself recommends always using 'premium' diesel - he likes Shell V Power. I use it myself 90+% of the time, and don't get any problems with my diesel BMW EGR valve, whereas I know plenty of people who run 'normal' diesel who have had problems. Only you can decide if the extra cost is worth it though.

We have a new Skoda Superb 1.4TSi. It's a fantastic car and I would definitely recommend it over a diesel. It's so quiet you can barely hear it running, and on a run it will get close to 50mpg. Best of all it has Active Cylinder Technology which disables cylinders 2 & 3 when the engine doesn't need much power, such as when cruising. You don't even feel the switchover. All you see is the indicator on the dash telling you it's in two cylinder mode. This improves the fuel economy even more.

Regular servicing, ie an oil change at circa 7 to 8k using VW Quantum oil or similar to 5w30 504/507 spec with a new oil filter; a change of air filter at 15k, and a change of pollen filters as and when necessary (no more than 20K); and fuel filter say every 25 to 30k. Forget the intervals that VW suggest.

I would certainly agree with the above regarding oil changes. I think the modern service intervals are far to long.

I would add that the turbo needs to be cooled after a longish run, for a few minutes, in other words never instantly switch off the engine, or drive gently for the last 1-2 miles of a journey.
