Hyundai ix35 - Shall I keep my diesel car or replace with petrol? - Harish

Hi

I need some expert advice whether to keep my diesel car or to change for a Petrol car. I bought Hyundai ix35 Diesel 65 plate from new (guess EURO6) and so far it worked fine as I was doing around 20K miles every year. Now I have got a job locally so I just travel 3 miles daily and around 10 miles on the weekends for grocery shopping. I read that lot of short trips is bad for the DPF so just want to check if it is a good idea to replace this with a Petrol car so that I don't need to worry about DPF in the future. In the worst case how much bill can I expect if the DPF develops any problem?

Assuming I get around 10K for my current car what family car (Saloon / Cross Over) would you suggest to get for that money? Comfort and reliability are a priority now rather than fuel efficiency.

Thanks in advance

Can you tell when your car starts a regen, if so then whenever possible extend the drive (hopefully regens will initiate on your weekend longer journeys) to allow the regen to complete.

I would buy the higher quality Diesel from Shell or another know brand, it can only help.

It might be worth having a chat with the service manager at your Hyundai dealer, see if he has any tips for you re keeping the DPF healthy, or for any other suggestions to help keep the vehicle performing well, only you will know if the service dept at your dealer are helpful or knowledgeable enough.

Its entirely possible your car will carry on happily for years, especailly if you get it serviced regularly, i wouldn't change it unless its starts to play up, if you had to get the DPF cleaned professionally before having to admit defeat and changing the car it wouldn't be a bank breaker.

I would definitely keep the car. Selling a car after 2 years from new is not financially the best thing to do, as you're shouldering the steepest part of the depreciation curve. That, on top of a dealer profit on the next car if you buy used, or further heavy depreciation on new, you'll be thousands out of pocket for little reason other than a probable over-hyped fear of diesel. As GB says, keep it well serviced, increase the frequency of oil changes ( your stated useage is bad for any car petrol or diesel) , try and give it a good run every couple of weeks of 30 or 40 miles. I don't think you'll have any problems.

If you have a smartphone, it may be possible to add an app, plus an adpater for your diagnostic socket that tells you the state of your DPF. With that, and using best-quality fuel it should be possible to keep your current car.

If you sell a 2 year old car you will loose ££££'s and the replacement will depreciate instantly.

If you have a DPF issue it will cost about £1000 to £1500 to replace which might sound a lot but its way less than the depreciation.

I say keep it and buy an appropriate car when its really time to swap and in the meantime keep your fingers crossed.

If the Hyundai is anything like our Kia it will do a regen every 250 to 300 miles and with a bit of practice and a sensitive ear they are easy to spot. Try and avoid stopping the engine part way through a regen, 2 or 3 failed ones will put on the dash light and then it can be dealer time unless you follow the instructions in the handbook.

Yes, if you bought a car new for 20k and sold it 2 years later for 10k you would lose 10k but if you kept it, it would still be only worth 10k. A brand new replacement would lose money but a similar 2 year car would only be worth less by the fact it had an extra owner.

If you don’t want the hassle of selling privately the best bet seems a px at a Hyundai dealer for a petrol model or maybe a smaller car would suit.

Thank you all for the advice. Its clear that I can keep my current car for now and not worry too much about DPF. However I need to be a bit careful and ensure that the DPF regen happens reguarly. Also I'll get a bluetooth dongle and some app (Torque) to check the signals from my phone.

My friend is in a similar situation as he has a 2 year old diesel and is wondering should he get rid now before it declines any further in price or keep hold?

He’s decided to keep hold for now unless he can find a really good deal.

His car is a diesel Skoda Octavia and he wants to swap it for a petrol Octavia

He reckons the 2nd-3rd year of ownership will cost him £2,100 in depreciation if he adds another 10k miles onto the car unless diesel values drop further - which he expects they may well do. But the cost of replacing with a new Octavia of a similar spec would cost him £7k.

Lot's of short trips are bad for a DPF-Why not go for a drive out on the weekend to encourage it to regen?

Fortunately the DPF implementation on the ix35 is pretty good to start with and the DPF is very close coupled with the engine so should be OK with a few runs out. Worth keeping an eye on the DPF with an APP if this is available.

Make sure the oil is changed frequently - don't rely on long life servicing. Active regens involve an additional injection of diesel during the exhaust stroke and a little bit can leak past the piston rings, especially as the engine wears, polluting the sump oil.
