ANY - Used Brake Shoes/Pads Disposal? - edlithgow

Looking for a spare pair of old brake shoes to reeplace my suspected brake-fluid contaminated pair, I found I'd also kept the pair that prompted the last replacement, which have detached linings.

If I was in India I might be able to get a "brake shoe wallah" to glue them back on, but here in Taiwan I can't think of a reason to keep them.

Are there any special arrangements in place in the UK for disposing of brake shoes/pads?

Its a fair bet there won't be any here in Taiwan, but if there are any elsewhere it might indicate a need for care.

Just throw them in the bin. They don't contain asbestos these days so not hazardous waste.

I usually give them to our local scrapman with the rest of the scrap metal.

In my misspent youth i had leaking rear axle outer bearings on my Himman Super Minx estate (there's posh for you), which contaminated the brake shoes with oil, after new oil seals a good splosh of petrol on those shoes and setting them alight saw the shoes serve me well for the rest of the time i owned the car.

Never heard of a Himman before, it was of course a Hillman, butterhook.

Yeh, I;ve heard of that trick, These shoes, however, are contaminated with brake fluid,. not oil.

If I'd thought of it in time I'd just have boiled them, since brake fluid is water-miscible, but I can't do that now since I've already treated the rusting steel backs with sunflower oil and aluminium, which would probably get on the shoes. Once the veg oil has set for a very long time I might be able to get away with it, but by that time the shoes will probably have dried out anyway so I'd just re-use them.

No problem, since I have a spare pair of shoes. While looking for it I found the other pair in that set, which have detached linings, and can't practically be fixed here, AFAIK.

Hence the disposal enquiry.

Sorry for any confusion.
