Correct and that is exactly how it is in most cars. As an example colleagues A6 was like that.

But standard seats in a MB are "Artico Leather" which is 100% plastic, never seen a cow. And that is all the seat inc the bit you sit on. Been loads on the interweb over the years with seats cracking etc and many 1000's of disgruntled buyers thinking they were getting real leather. But if you read the brochure it clearly says that Artico Leather is fake. So in my opinion its partly the buyers fault.

Rode in a nearly new E class the other week. The Artico seats are horrid, hard, unforgiving and slippery. The facric seats in the Superb are way better.

Looked at a Kia Rio a few weeks ago before we ordered the Fabia. The "3" spec would have suited us but the standard seats were "faux leather" i.e. plastic. That one fact turned us away. There is no way I am buying a car with plastic seats, last one I had was a 1972 Viva.

From the Kia brochure "Some parts of the leather upholstery contain faux leather"

Personally steer clear of leather, real or faux - find them cold in winter, and "sweaty" in summer -

I'm not a fan of leather seats, either in the car or home.

And it does amuse me that people go for leather because they think it is posh, or upmarket, but if you go far enough back in time, it was actually considered the opposite!. There is a particular type of body you got on very upmarket vintage cars where the driver (servant, employee) was in the open, exposed to the elements, sitting on leather, whereas the owners, be they royalty, nobility or whatever, would be sitting on some kind of cloth in the fully enclosed rear cabin.

So yes, leather used to be considered more suitable for the lower classes or hired help!.

Yes: Bedford Cloth used to be an upgrade for Rover cars in the 1930s/early 1940s..

I too don't like leather.. too cold in winter unless heated.. and I have burned my legs when entering a leather seated MB in South Africa when wearing shorts..

I went to look at a second hand Mercedes last year. The 'leather' on the driver's seat was in a dreadful state. The only advantage I can think of for having leather seats in a luxury car is that they should be more resistant to wear.
