Afternoon,

Wounded if you can help. My brother loaded me his Ford Focus St 2008, which has an RS conversion; whilst my discovery is current is off the road, anyway I digress...

Been using his car for a number of weeks However, as we all know the weather hasnt been great and yesterday on my 9 mile journey to the office I was presented with an high temperature warning light. In fairness the warning came within the first 5 miles.

Upon getting to the office i discovered the coolant tank was empty. Thus, filled it and later in the day completed the return jouney. This time however the warning was presented with 1 mile. Completed the journey home and again no collant. Discovered the coolant extended tank was leaking and now replaced this.

Unfortunately, I turned the engine on and guess what within 5 minutes of non driving the high temperature returned. Observation showed the coolant was bubbling and whilst the coolant was just above min at the start it was way over max within minutes (clearly due to pressure); naturally the fans on the engine radiator were on.

Now my issue is I’m at home can’t really take it anywhere and have no breakdown cover. Ford when speaking to them advised of the replacement extended tank but as it stands not sure; they want to pick the car up and effective strip elements of the car... sounding very expensive investigation work.

So has anyone experienced anything similar, can offer thoughts, etc...

You have not been speaking to Ford, you have at best been speaking to one of their franchised dealers.

The first thing they should be doing is a sniff test on the cooling tank to check for exhast gasses. After that pressure test for the cooling systemand possibly an engine compression test as well.

But its a 10 year old car and are you sure you want to be paying Ford dealer rates. A good independent, better still a performance Ford specialist are more appropiate. repairs could easill be more than the car is worth.

Ok technicalities aside of dealer / representative of ford. A franchised master technician offered the advise. And aside to taking it in for a full review can offer no further advise.

Appreciate, the comments on the cost of a dealer to carry out work; will need to see how my brother wishes to proceed...

Was hoping there may be something else which could be checked and tested ourselves before including cost

Was there any anti-freeze in it?

Whatever the root cause it sounds as if the head gasket has failed now.

Does nobody ever stop when the temperature or oil pressure warning light comes on?

A good independent is probably the best way to proceed.

Thanks for the response.

In terms of the ST it has two temp gauges one on the main instrument panel and one on the dash in the centre the one on panel warns at getting to 110oC the one on the dash warns at 140oC. The temp maxed out at 120oC.

There was anti freeze in the car in each instance (well unsure about the first instance) not at the end of the journey. As mentioned the extended anti freeze resovouir had a leak. And replaced. I’ve not moved the vehicle since and been working to repair.

I’ll contact an independent repairer to see what can be done.

The temp gauge in front of the driver is coolant temp.The one over the centre of the dash is oil temp. If the engine has been run with little or no coolant ,then possible engine damage may have occurred. The engine in these is basically a Volvo powertrain. So you may be better off to find a specialist in this marque.

With symptoms like these I would place a large bet on CHG failure = £££££££££ for the garage.

Why don't all cars have a cheap low coolant sensor like the one attached to most brake fluid reservoir caps, which flashes a red light and makes a pinging noise? Ah -silly me - the answer's obvious.

I think the answer would be the same whatever the vehicle. The expansion tank or the connections to it have failed because of excessive pressure and pretty much the only source of this would be a blown head gasket between a water way passing through to the head and one of the cylinders. Might not be too bad if you can do it yourself but there is always the worry that the head was or now is warped especially in view of the overheating, plus main bearings and end shells will not have enjoyed the experience. I think it may be time to say goodbye to it.
