Police want your DashCam footage - autumnboy

The police in my area as well other forces around the UK are asking for your DashCam footage of bad driving, texting using phones etc. Which is fair enough.

But they will only accept them if you are prepared to stand in court if prosecution did proceed.

Why for small offences when they have video footage with all the details of time, date, speed and GPS on most DashCams.

Chilling and disturbing news.

A police force asking the people its meant to represent, to grass each other up and film other citizens.

And they wonder why people dont respect the police force.

I'm not really sure how that is "chilling".

Not at all chilling. It's simply an appeal for witnesses.

The term grass up refers to criminal co-conspirators turning 'Queen's Evidence' to avoid/mitigate the consequences of their actions.

It has no application to those innocently reporting crimes they have witnessed.

The point I'm trying to make,

If the police want any footage of any bad driving or people using phones while driving.

With number of incidents seen every day, one could spend every day in court in various areas to support the evidence in every case of prosecution.

So why do they ask for you to be prepared to attend court while they have video evidence of the crime, otherwise they are not interested what you may have if you refuse.

Whats the point in asking....

Whats the point in asking....

The Police last year said that they were going to ask for public help to catch certain criminals/motoring offenders.

reason being, they have not the resources to do it all themselves due to government cuts which were going to be severe yet again, i`m sure their will be some people that would help the Police in some way.?

I supect there may be an issue with admisibilty of video evidence alone, particulalry where it's not sourced from 'approved' kit.

Quite simply. If you are handing over dash cam footage, that makes you a witness.

If someone is charged, witnesses may have to give evidence under oath. Their version of events may be challenged by defence council. They may be asked what happened prior to the the start of the footage provided.

The footage may result in someone being fined and or banned or possibly being given a jail term. So it's quite appropriate and reasonable for the witness to attend court and answer questions and to verify the authenticity of any footage.

a society that encourages its citizens to film each other and report their behaviour no matter how trivial tends to have terrible consequences

It is not a police issue but a law issue. The police can only submit evidence that has been lawfully obtained and there has to be a trail that can be followed back to where that evidence came from. This means, in this instance, the person who put the memory card into the recording device and then having recorded the incident took the memory card out and handed it to the person or authority investigating the incident. The police don’t make these rules or laws the government through the courts does. If you see or record something then you are the only person who can legally submit that as evidence ordinarily. So if you want to complain then you have to stand up and be counted. That is the law of the land, the police are merely acting as the agent between you and the court of law.

Well I don’t like the sound of it. It’s one thing to ask for witnesses after an incident but another to go trawling.

As to cuts, one might ask if police resources are being used effectively eg looking at Twitter posts.

creates a great source of worry for personal safety if it becomes necessary to appear in a witness box and discuss in front of a defendant the evidence being presented ... knowing that the defendant may go to prison or suffer a severe punishment as a result of the same evidence ... I'd only give the evidence if my identity was protected, or in an extreme case where there had been an identifable victim seeking redress

One of the problems is that different police forces have different interpretations, some you take the footage to them, some you can upload online.

In Leicestershre, my county, I had footage of two cars who got fed up of being behind a slow moving farm vehicle and overtook on a hatched area/double white lines and round the wrong side of a traffic island.

Police were ambivalent and wanted footage asap to meet the 14 day NIP rule - or so they claimed. In they end I thought stuff it as their atttude was not encouraging.

Very handy for the powers that be for the future, they have a list of those useful to the state for monitoring of possible dissidents.

Didn't the Stazi have a similar arrangement with a network of informers?, what's next i wonder getting children in the spyingh/informing scheme, khmer rouge style.
