Its not as though the payload was that much heavier (in total) than the Mars Curiosity rover, which actually got to Mars exactly when and were it was supposed to, then executed a perfect (and very complex) set of manouvres by itself to land on the surface and then start its mission. Chucking a car out into (not-so-deep) space (and not getting the trajectory correct) was easy in comparison. All they've demonstrated is that they've got a bit closer to NASA in terms of what can be achieved - hardly 'ground breaking'.
