I have just read that the VW Passat Estate is now available withe the 14 TSI engine.

The passat is quite a large estae (obviously).

Does anybody know (or could hazard a guess) what the real world MPG would be with this engine, and if it would generally be considered powerful enough for such a large vehicle?

I am out of my knowledge base unfortunately with most things mechanaical.

Thanks

That engine has been available in the skoda superb for some time now. A car which is generally accepted as being one the biggest and most spacious cars in it's class. One of the forum members, skidpan, I'm pretty sure has a superb 1.4 tsi, so hopefully he will see this and give you some more info, but, as far as I have read, that engine is fine in the superb (and pretty good on fuel).

I have the 1.4tsi Octavia,2012 version

I get around 47mpg Glasgow to Cambridge doing 75mph as much as possible.

A road Glasgow to Skye 52mpg.

Probably low 40s mixed driving round town.

Those are brim to brim calculations not from the car computer.w

I find the engine has ample power even loaded. Pulls better from low down than my previous 1.8 Mondeo

I have a 2017 Superb 1.4 TSi SE 150 PS. It replaced a 2013 Seat Leon 1.4 TSi SE 140 PS.

Both have been absolutely brilliant. Loads of power, mid 40's ,mpg overall, just over 50 mpg on a run, about 40 mpg in town, I have had diesels with less performance that did fewer mpg.

Simply the best engine on the market at the moment for its blend of performance and economy.

Thanks for the replies on this and taking the time to help me. Skidpan seems in a great place to comment with his experience.

After a bit of internet searching I am veering towards a Seat Leon Estate or (suprisingly) the Passat estate.

The passat seems to being offered at larger discounts than normal - I wonder if the model is about to be changed.

Bit concerned about the size of the Passat around town - I am used to much smaller cars; SEAT ST smaller and a bit cheaper (with the same 1.4 TSI engine) - but I assume the Passat would generally be considered the better car.

Looked at a Mazda CX3, but boot space much smaller than I imagined; Mazda 3 has a good scrappage scheme for even petrol cars but doesnt seem otherwise outstanding. Golf estae expensive! VW TRoc looks great but no discounts available - yet.

The choice out their is massive, but all seem to have a downside of some sort!

Bought both the Leon and Superb via Carfile. Way less than buying form a dealer and you still get all the manufacturer offers available at the time you buy. They are doing 11% on the T-Roc, Search carfile.net.

Leon ST is only available in FR and Excellence trim with the 1.4 TSI engine. Excellence is too expensive and the FR only comes with 1/2 plastic sports seats, lowered sports suspension and rock hard 45 profile tyres which spoil the Leon SE's excellent ride.

The Skoda Octavia is smaller than the Passat and is available with the 1.4 TSi engine even in SE trim (think its the 1.5 TSI now). Problem is the interior noise, its deafening in some and just plain noisy in others. We have looked at them 3 times now hoping that they would be improved but its always been the same story. Its beyond me why this has happened, same car underneath as the Leon and Superb both of which are refined. And its not just me, others heve commented on here and plenty of comment on the Skoda forum. Try one, you may like it but make sure you get a 1/2 day test drive on a variety of roads.

The reason you get big or bigger discounts on the passat is because it is not a big seller. The reason for that is VW price it too high, and the reason for that is because VW, optimistically, consider it closer to the BMW 3 series, Audi A4, and Mercedes C class than the mondeo, insignia, superb, etc. But UK buyers, notorious for being badge snobs, are not going to come out of the aforementioned premium brands for what they consider to be a lower class car. And likewise, mondeo, insignia, and suberb owners are not going to pay more for a car which they feel is no better or classier.

If you can get a REALLY good deal for the passat, fair enough, but if you can get a suberb for less, and i think that is very likely, then you should go for the superb, it's a better car.

My Octavia SE was noisy on the OE Bridgestone tyres. The car was tranbsformed when I replaced them with Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons. The tyre noise pretty much vanished with the moderate engine noise being the dominany noise at most speeds. I chose an all seasons tyre as the Bridgestones were dangerous if any snow or ice was encountered and poor in the wet. I hope for some noise reduction but couldn't believe the difference changing tyres made.

But yes definately test an Octavia over different surfaces. Tyre noise can be an issue.

I have a new Seat Leon estate diesel (company car) and it has 5 gears and it s bit noisy on the motorway.

Also agree with you about ride quality with lower profile tyres my has 17 inch wheels and I would have prefered 16 inch.

My 2014 1.4tsi Superb (EA111 125ps) barge has averaged 45.8mpg over many miles:-

www.spritmonitor.de/en/detail/720963.html

It pulls well from 1500rpm (not a well as my old 1.9pd) really taking off from 3500rpm and keeps pulling through to 6000rpm . Holds it's own on the German Autobahns. It's also very quiet.

The newer Passat has the later EA211 engine usually with 150ps and has ACT (two cylinder when coasting). This engine is more powerful and more efficient. Go and try one...

"My Octavia SE was noisy on the OE Bridgestone tyres. The car was tranbsformed when I replaced them with Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons."

SWMBO's Audi A1 was the same. The A1 isn't noted for road noise, and like your Octavia it's much quieter on the Goodyear all-seasons.

I had three Octavia vRSs, and they all came with OE Continentals. I very much doubt that VW Group cars are designed to run on Japanese Bridgestone tyres: some penny-pinching has been going on I fear.

Would it might be the case that the high spec versions have completely different tyre brands? If I recall correctly from when I was looking for a new car this time last year, standard model Mazdas (SE-L and below) on 16in tyres are Toyos and Sport models on 18in tyres are Dunlops.

I personally haven't driven any cars on Bridgestone tyres since I got rid of the (IMO) horrible OEM ER30s on my 12yo Mazda3, but from looking at reviews of Bridgestone tyres up until then, I found they were a lot less regarded than 10 years before then. I had similar issues to those mentioned; changing to Dunlops has cured the problems.

I'll have to re-read the Good & Bad section on the Octavia as I do recall a few complaints somewhere on this website about tyre noise and issues on the SE models.

I own an Octavia Combi 1.4Tsi and consider it of a similar size to a Passat Estate, I owned a model B5.5 many years ago.

Overall I have got 47mpg (according to the computer) but on long runs over 54mpg is possible. Hanging bikes on the back knocks off 10% at least .
