Ford Granada GL auto 1985 - how to get rid - A Knapp

Hi,

I was given the above car about 4 months ago by a cousin who couldn't drive any more. I sorned it and left it in his Council house garage. Now, unfortunately, he has passed away.

The vcar is unregistered, last Mot in April 2013, and uninsured. How do I sell it? I can't drive it anywhere to get it MOT'd.

I have to move it from the Council's garage within the next month. Some advice here would be welcomed.

Advertise it on ebay. Include as many photos as you can. Make sure you state that the buyer will need to trailer it away.

Someone will take it, probably for spares.

My brother sold his 1983, admittedly with MOT, for 5k on ebay and didn`t take long to sell. seems to be a parts problem with those so it should go fairly quick I think

Car and Classic is a good site for selling or eBay if you price it right. But if it’s nice and doesn’t need much then I’d get it through another Mot. It’ll attract a far greater number of potential buyers and a far higher sale price.

A late Mk II is quite rare and very much in demand while the Mk III will be worth less it’s still well worth spending a few quid getting it road legal. I’m a fan of both shapes. I miss the big old blue collar executives like the Granada, Carlton, Pug 505, Rover 800 etc. Other than the Skoda Superb there’s really nothing similar today.

I can still remember noticing, during the early 70s, that our local mini cab company had equipped their drivers with brand new Granadas; presumably the Mark 1.

For the model to stand out in the eyes of someone like me who, at the time, was totally uninterested in cars, they must have been something special.

Unlike anything else on the road: big, powerful, plush and above all, good to look at, especially in black.

Whatever happens, it needs to go to someone who can either restore it or keep it in good fettle. There is a classic Ford specialist I've seen advertised in the car magazines, can't remember their name, but they ask very good money for their stock of Granadas.

I had a red 84 GL auto. A motorised armchair - loved it but I think it was more thirsty than my SD1 V8!

The earlier Mk 2's, before the facelift, looked the best though, with those mean looking strips of lights at the rear.

I went on a mechanics course when I was in my teens, and the teacher had a Mk 1 Granada 3.0 auto. He gave me a lift to the workshop, and I'll never forget the way he kept his slippers in the footwell and drove there and back in them after changing out of his work boots.

I too loved the mk 2 Granada, especially the 2.8 auto, this should fetch decent money if it isn't a rotter, might well be worth getting it trailered to an MOT station so buyers have it confirmed it isn't rotten as a pear underneath, plus a much easier sale when they can put cash in your hand jump in and drive away.

Might be worth getting it moved somewhere else for 3 or 4 months till the winter is over, few people want to go inpecting old cars fully in the freezing cold, and then have to trailer it away.

There are a couple of good ideas in the thread. I'll chew them over a bit before acting on them.

Thanks to the posters.

Was the car special to your cousin? Presumably so if it was kept for so long. How do you feel about the car on a personal level? I ask because, if you sell it as non-roadworthy and in need of trailoring away, sadly there is a very good chance it will end up with the banger racer yobs, who will strip it to flog the bits and then wreck it. Big old barges like the Granada are hugely popular with their sort, and sadly as the supply of them dwindles they remain as keen as ever to continue destroying as many as they can get their hands on. You may be glad just to get rid of the thing of course, but if you have an interest in its continued existance, it would be worth some caution as to who you sell it to.

I have an interest in big old Fords having owned various models from a Consul 375 to a Consul GT (Granada style). If it is in good condition it could be worth ringing AfFordAble Classics (they are on the web).As others have said an MOT (if easily achieveable) would be a huge advantage. However , cars requiring major body work are hard to shift because of parts supply and labour costs.

My Dad used to have a mk2 granada estate, a 1981 2.8GL. He still misses it to this day, despite it costing quite a lot in repairs and having sold it in about 1988!.

I agree with others that this definitely needs to be offered to someone who will restore it, or at least use it to keep other granada's on the road. Classic Ford magazine would probably be worth a try, also try an online search for classic Ford owner clubs or forums.

I forgot to mention my brother sold his for 5k with a faulty autobox, it wouldnt drive at all and needed a new box, so it shows people like the Granada and pay a good price even if they need work, only thing I didnt like about it, it was light metalic green. yuk

though he spent 2 years rebuilding the car he regrets selling it, but it was expensive to run and he is getting too old to do any work
