I have been looking up a couple of cars on the Mot History website.

The test location always now comes up as "Unavailable until further notice"

Was very handy - anybody know why it's been suspended?

Apologies if this has been asked before.

Yes, the test location disappearance was spotted by nico77 back in November.

The following thread has some speculations...

The chap that trains us is an ex VOSA senior traffic examiner, we were discussing licences etc during one of the sessions and i asked the question, he reckons data protection, of which apparently there are lots of new guidelines coming into force for companies and govt depts to conform to with penalties for not doing so.

Oh -So it's more than likely to satisfy the sensitivities of those who don't want this information in the public domain, whoever they may be.

If you buy a car and the past MOT certs are included in the paperwork, that's in the public domain - so what's the difference?

Whatever happened to Freedom of Information?

This government spends far too much time pandering to vested interests IMHO.

That would fit. A new Data Protection regime comes in later this year. My other half is concerned about it might affect her work in education research because it might require individual opt ins by parents for their children's participation. Current regime is 'opt out'.

If individual testing stations had not been explicitly asked about their name/location being shown then there might well be a problem. There were a handful of cases where testers had put ill advised comments on the advisory notes including observations about the car, it's owner's attitude and their appearance.

And making someting available to the world and his wife is, in DP terms, a very different thing for sharing a paper certificate between individuals with a legititmate interest in the content.

If the information has gone for good from the VOSA website then, all I can say it, it's a great pity.

Seems rather strange that the Test Location information was only available for a very short time. Perhaps someone at VOSA didn't do their homework before this information was released?

I do hope it comes back. It's very useful reading for someone who is looking to purchase a used car.

Perhaps someone at VOSA didn't do their homework before this information was released?

That, or something similar, is almost certainly the case. The other scenario is that the people in VOSA who are DP specialists advised there might be problems but that senior managers went ahead anyway.

Rather than just cop-out and delete where the tests were carried out, it shouldn't be beyond the wit of some IT expert at VOSA to display the first letters of the postcode of the test station.. That wouldn't display enough info to identify the test station, but it would help enquirers to know the postcode area where the car was tested.
