Any - A true utility 4 x 4 to replace the LR Defender. - bazza

Around our way, in the Welsh countryside and upland areas, there's a need for what I call a proper 4 x4, a genuinely tough utility vehicle. One of my favourite vehicles, which I have never had the need to own is of course the Land Rover Defender, or Series1,2, or 3. There are still many of these around here. I remember a holiday job I had, where we literally did pull trees out of the ground with one and pulled huge static caravans across muddy fields. It seemed there was nothing this thing couldn't do. I've driven a few in terrain that would have initially looked impossible.

But now it's not made anymore and JLR concentrate on the luxury SUV market, having moved away from utility. Even if these vehicles are as capable,( are they?) they're not as practical for an everyday farmer or outdoor person day to day. And they're exteremely expensive to buy and run. And dare I say fragile, stuffed with electronics and over complicated suspension etc. So what is there out there that replaces the Defender as a proper rugged, immensely practical, genuine off roader? That is affordable? That can go anywhere, pull impossible loads and keep doing that for years? To answer my own question, I think that the pick-up truck has taken over that market, the Hi Lux springs to mind as about the toughest thing on the market right now. But I'm no expert, merely writing what I observe. Interested to hear others opinion.

Yes Hilux does the job but lacks 3.5 ton towing ability, it will tow it but not legally and they've hobbled the latest model by downsizing the engine to a 2.4, best bet is to find a 3 litre used but it still only has a 2.5 or 2.8 ton towing limit.

Navara now has a terrible reputation due to chassis snapping in half.

Which leaves Isuzu Mazda Mitsubishi and the new Ford Rangers.

Toyota have the best tool for the job by a country mile, they still make the 70 series (i had one in the 80's) and it now boasts the 4.5 V8 twin turbo Diesel engine and sits on leaf springs but has been modified with airbags ABS etc, but they won't supply them here for some obscure reason and i think they are missing a grand opportunity to take LR's workhorse market for themselves, also available in single cab form plus estate (Wagon) and longer higher roofed estate (based on troop carrier) form.

Cheap it wouldn't be but then neither were Defenders.

There will be good used Defenders around for years to come and there are numerous firms that specialise in reconditioning them.

A good used Defender would make an ideal stop-gap until the all-new Defender comes along in 2019 !!!

The next Defender will be a very different vehicle, functionally particularly

There may not currently be a defender, but there will be. Next year i think is when it is finally supposed to break cover. From what i have read, there will be a 'utilitarian' spec for farmers or any others who need it for work as well as plusher versions for the poseurs. No idea as yet about mechanical specs, but given Land Rovers current line up has a less than steller reputation for reliability, i'm not sure i'd want to plough my own money into one if it is to be a working vehicle.

If you want to think outside the box, then there is a very low tech Land Rover equivalent still available new (not in this country) which has been soldiering on with little real change since 1971. I am of course refering to the Russian Land Rover, the Uaz 469!. These days it is called the Uaz Hunter, but it is essentially the same thing. Engine choices are a pretty old school 2.7 4 cylinder 128hp petrol, or a 2.2 113hp turbo diesel. No idea where the diesel comes from, i'm guessing it is not a Russian design though. They are pretty cheap, as they should be(!) I don't know where the closest you'd have to go in order to buy one in Europe, but i am fairly certain you can get them new in Poland, which is not that far away.

But check it out,

The Toyota Landcruiser series 70 would probably have the same difficulty passing current EU safety regulations that caused the demise of the Defender.
