Am I right in thinking less car models have rubbing strips/door protectors along the sides these days. Some very expensive cars are candidates for the ''door dings'' in car parks.

Yes you are right, but it is not something new, rubbing strips have been disappearing for quite a number of years now.

Simple answer is that they are not fashionable, they don't fit in with the designers vision of the car. Citroën recently have been trying to make a feature out of the 'airbumps' fitted to the cactus and some versions of the new C3. I quite like them, but I do wonder what they will look like after 5 years plus?

Its the shape of door edges that cause the worse damage, especially back doors where the shape of the door where it goes over the rear wheelarch forms a point when the door is opened, hence my aversion to parking beside cars that look like they contain children.+

Rubbing strips have become part of the look of the car so no longer are they sensible rubber strips, they are now painted plastic, probably no cheaper to paint or fix than the door itself.

Could also be because rubbing strips increase drag by a fraction of a percent and every little helps in minimising the CO2 emissions thrown up by the unrealistic test regime. Door handles are now mostly flush fitting for the same reason, as are radio aerials etc.

They've been dropped from the 2018 model - imagine they were expensive to repair if one was damaged - probably have to replace all of them
