Bmw e46 316 2004 model - Automatic Gearbox Issue - Gear Monitoring 4 and 5 - allan doc

My automatic gearbox keeps going into limp mode while in drive. Itp then brings up the transmission cog on dashboard with the error code gear monitoring 4 and gear monitoring 5. When i put in sports mode it hardly even happens. Once the engine switched off for a min the error clears. The car has only done 75000. I have searched online was followed advice about trying new battery, cleaning maf sensor and checking connections but to no avail. There is no other codes being stored. The gearbox is a sealed system and cant check level on it. I have spoke to several mechanics and they just recommended trying a specialist but since the car is getting on a bit i would rather leave this stage till last resort. Has anyone came across this code or recommending trying a few other checks?

Thsi fault indicates there is slippage in the gearbox.I would get an auto box specialist to check the fluid quality and level.Changing the fluid and filter may make a difference.Anything more involved will be an uneconomic repair.

Just an update. Was going uphill and there was burning clutch smell. Looked under car and there was smoke coming off exhaust next to auto transmission box. There is a slight leak on the sump i know of but this smell was differant. Could the transmission be leaking?
